And so I knew the Old World firsthand, just before it expired for good. I don’t feel any nostalgia for it. Or regret. Fond memories don’t resurface in my mind: they sleep and play dead. I grew up in the Trentes Glorieuses . I was a child of those thirty glorious years after WWII, not a participant. I lived in comfort, in softness, broadly ignorant of life’s harshness. For the most part everything was peaceful, even though I was acquainted with misfortune and heartrending events. I suffered distress, sorrow. I went through crises of despair.
