ELEVEN POEMS By Maria Stepanova Translated from the Russian by Sibelan Forrester

Two poems from Protiv liriki

Be my extramural nest! A red house like an icon corner: In the left eye that fronts the east Is uninterrupted flaming coal. As I walk to the overpass, Hip pressed against a stranger’s hip, The way the glass in an empty glass Awaits the presence of Perrier.

Leading you by the arm to see A red house with which I’m acquainted.

The night around it, like a ditz; The day around it, like a banner.
