Needlefish thin inside his kimono. It’s not hard, he said to himself. It’s not hard figuring people out. They all have character marks all over them, just like birthmarks. You just have to look carefully. They resemble maps. They retain the mystery until you find where their scale is written. Then their lives become as obvious as the sun. Their lives that resemble blondes. Their pretty-but-stupid lives… And look Koma did. Resolutely he looked for a trace in the man as he regarded himin themirror. But itwasall aswhiteas his kimono. His movements, eyes, hands, voice…he was like a snowflake. As if he had no storywhatsoever. Despite his extraordinary appearance he seemed to be as ordinary as an ant. He was so pale he merged into the three white-painted walls of the hall. Koma was visible, though. His soul was as black as gasoline. Once the 18-minute workout to accustom their muscles to daily life had ended they all stood and left the hall. Jannick lost no time in catching up with Koma. He began to chat. He was talking about a woman they both knew, how she was pregnant and no one knew who the father was. Koma wasn’t listening but merely hearing him. He could use Jeet Kune Do to yank out Jannick’s jugular like a fishbone. At least then they would be good for something. Both Jannick and the martial art he was learning. He didn’t reply until they had reached the showers. He just nodded. He knew Jannick from school. Due to extreme misfortune they had met again in the JAB and the same curse had dictated that their workout hours should turn out to be the same. He talked
