Winter Wars

Soldiers trudge into that thick carpet of snow go numb, freeze in eternal advance.

First, our brothers walk towards a hail of machine gun fire then we can’t see them anymore. So, we put out our pyres and head into the fray. We return white, powdered in ashen frost.

Even when he got back he kept standing around, shielding his eyes with his hand. He felt that hard line where sky meets sand had gone straight through him.

*

Suddenly, I can see everything. The sun is setting and I am white lost in white.
