Gaia Warnings

Philip Burton

Ode to Sheep I like being ignored by the watchful eye of a flock of sheep on their daily grind. What silent airy landscape, almost sky they nearly inhabit. Where do they find the stimuli to know they are not dead? Sun-rich buttercups and pot-hole smells can only feed a five-minute ecstasy and yet they look alert and interested. Perhaps their busy minds store details for a book ‘Grass Management Looks Easy .’

He wipes it quiet, shields his eyes. A NATO plane glides between Armentieres and the careless-lidded honey of landscape slowly finding its ancient level.
