stupid. Because Goldie wasn’t gorgeous and the last thing in the world Aggie was was graceful. So what a joke that they both mindlessly felt these names reflected them and that they as people were some kind of natural embodiment of their name. Pure vanity drawing on superstition. And they couldn’t see it. They made me cringe. I happened to be in the kitchen when I overheard all of this. I’d been looking for my loaf in the cupboard at the time, as per usual – it was too large for the breadbin which was a silly shape and an impractical size for a house with six people living in it. I found the loaf at last -- a good deal shorter than it had been though, with the wrapper folded round and

It didn’t surprise me that others had been going through my food stash and taking what they wanted as this was as only what I’d come to expect of the housemates. Scum-bags all. While I was getting the shorter loaf out of the cupboard I couldn’t help listening to Glea and Aggie droning on. And as I unfolded the wrapper I was thinking, ‘That’s what I should do. Change my name to annoy the house- mates.’ Though, I knew only too well that nobody would take me seriously enough to respect my wishes. I could just hear Glea whining, ‘But we’re used to Damien now,’ and putting her head on one side in that fetching way she had – and when I say fetching I mean I’d like
