island reveals large numbers of Atlantic puffins, Arctic terns, and black guillemots, and you’ll enjoy home-baked cakes and cookies with Vigur’s residents. A hike to a towering waterfall is followed by a cruise past the cliffs of Latrabjarg, Europe’s largest bird cliff. Millions of seabirds—from northern gannets to razorbills—make their home along the promontory of steep ledges, out of the range of scavenging foxes. After sailing through the remote Klakkeyjar Islands, arrive in Reykjavík. Disembark on Day 10 and depart.

DAYS 1-3 REYKJAVÍK TO VATNAJÖKULL NATIONAL PARK From Reykjavík, cruise to Heimaey, where the power of Iceland’s geothermal forces is very evident—in 1973, the Eldfell volcano erupted here, destroying many buildings and forcing an evacuation of the residents to mainland Iceland. Sail past Surtsey, an island formed by volcanic eruptions just 10 years earlier. In Vatnajökull National Park, local watercraft bring you across a huge freshwater lagoon formed by the melting ice of one of the tongues of the Vatnajökull Glacier. You’ll go birdwatching at Bulandsnes, a renowned bird sanctuary, and at Papey Island, home to some 30,000 pairs of puffins during the summer months.

DAYS 4-6 LANGANES PENINSULA TO AKUREYRI The verdant Langanes Peninsula is covered by mossy meadows studded with crumbling remains of long-ago settlements. In Húsavík, the “Whale Capital of Iceland,” you’ll visit the whale museum and go on a whale-watching excursion looking for humpbacks, minkes, and other cetaceans. Akureyri is the gateway to Lake Myvatn, part of a protected nature reserve, and many birds frequent the surrounding wetlands. DAYS 7-10 VIGUR ISLAND TO REYKJAVÍK Sail past the Hornbjard Cliffs to Vigur, a private island that’s home to a single farming family. A walk across the
