hen making a decision regarding housing options, there are a number of factors to consider. Senior housing options range widely in terms of services and ameni- ties offered. It is important to be aware of the type of housing options available and how they meet the needs of the individual. Location of a facility is many times the most impor- tant factor when looking for housing options. Proximity to family and friends can play a vital role. housing listings in this directory are arranged alphabetically by county. Although pricing is an important factor, it should not be the only factor in making a housing decision. Please note that pricing information is not included in this directory. It is very important to understand the fees structure of a facility for comparison purposes. This directory lists the fol- lowing options: 1. retirement Communities - Self contained housing communities designed for older adults which may offer structured activities, dining, and supportive ser- vices. Retirement communi- ties are broken out into the following categories:
hours a day Some continuing care facilities offer indepen- dent retirement options for individuals who choose not to pay entrance or endowment fees (monthly rental option). The only limita- tion is access to various levels of care. no guar- antee exists for admission to the campus cBRF or skilled nursing unit. 2. independent Senior living - usually apart- ment type settings catering to independent older adults. Also included are condominiums for older adults. 3. Continuing Care Communities - A contin- uing care community offers various levels of care to its residents under one roof. continuing care communities may charge an endowment or entrance fee which guar- antees admission to the different levels of care it offers. Monthly fees vary based on the level of care needed. Each continuing care community offers different endowment and entrance fee programs. Many fees are now refundable on a percent- age basis. I ndependent retirement Communities: Independent retirement communities are apart- ment like settings which offer numerous amenities to residents. Individuals must be able to care for themselves in this setting. For this directory, inde- pendent retirement com- munities at a minimum provide the following amenities: • optional meal plan (or included in the month- ly rate) • Emergency call system which allows a resi- dent to access help 24
