Small town charm and an active business community. Gardens that bloom from spring til frost. A spring-fed artesian lake. Those are just three reasons why Monticello is a great place to live, work, and visit. The Monticello Chamber of Commerce works diligently to promote local businesses, organizations, and events. Monticello’s Main Street is a neat and tidy downtown district. Visit the bar and grill, pubs, or coffee shop, and enjoy a tasty meal at one of the unique restaurants. Locals and visitors alike enjoy Montesian Gardens. Brick walking paths lead the way through this community garden project which is maintained by volunteer caretakers. Picnic tables, benches, and a gazebo add to the welcoming atmosphere. Veteran's Memorial is also located here; see page 31 for information. Lake Montesian also offers scenic beauty for all seasons. You’ll often see families fishing, or kayaks coasting on the smooth waters. A footbridge leads to an island with benches and plenty of shade in the middle of the lake. Lake Montesian is the go-to site for many community events – including Green County’s best fireworks display during Monticello’s Homecoming celebration – a traditional hometown favorite held in July. Gempeler’s Supermarket is a throwback to the good old days of full-service at an independently owned grocery store. Locally operated since 1972, Gempeler’s is the perfect spot for finding picnic supplies and local flavors. They have their very own line of Alpine Boy meats – bratwurst, bologna, summer sausage, wieners, Kalburwurst and Landjaeggers – all made and smoked onsite. For a peak into the past, stop in at the Monticello Area Historical Society Museum. Located downtown in a former drug store, the museum is open on Saturdays from May through October. The society also maintains an excellent online collection of photos at monticellohistoricalsociety.org. fun facts + things to see and do
