Yodeling, alphorns, and fondue…Swiss heritage is on the menu when you spend some time in New Glarus! From festivals to family reunions, to girlfriend getaways or “bike first so you can eat more cheese” weekends, New Glarus has things covered.

Dig in to the roots of the area with a visit to the Swiss Historical Village & Museum. Peek into the original settler's cabin to get an idea of how families in New Glarus lived in the early years. You'll also get an idea of how they made a living – as cheese makers, sausage makers, bee keepers, farmers, textile workers, and more. Downtown New Glarus is everything a downtown should be! It's easily walkable – with fun stores to check out. Cheese shop? Yes! Quilt shop? Of course! Bakery? Yum! There's also on-trend apparel and accessories, home and garden décor, bath and body, toys and games, antiques and vintage, leather and canvas goods, outdoor gear, furniture, jewelry, pottery, and even e-bikes for rent. Eclectic, unusual, and sometimes a bit quirky…the Chalet of the Golden Fleece Museum is a hidden gem! You've heard of the Smithsonian? Well this is the “Swissonian” with collections curated by world traveler Edwin Barlow. His knack for finding the extraordinary is evident in every room – with folk art, needlework, miniatures, wood carvings and other iconic pieces that harken back to earlier generations in the old country. Fun stuff for kids and families: New Glarus “Cow Parade,” meet the goats at Swissland Mini Golf, sit in the desks in the one-room school house at the Swiss Historical Village, bike the Sugar River Trail. New Glarus also has great parks and a public swimming pool. Fun stuff for adults: See where Spotted Cow beer is made, join friends for wine and wood-fired pizza (and live music on weekends) at Bailey's Run Vineyard, sip a flight of beer on the front porch at Puempel's Olde Tavern, enjoy burgers and live music on the back deck at Toffler's Pub and Grill, and start with specialty cocktails before a special dinner at Kristi's Bistro. Of course, you'll find fondue and Swiss cuisine in New Glarus. But there's also burgers, pizza and pasta, European pub fare, hearty soups and sandwiches, dishes with Mexican influence, ice cream and sweet treats.
