1375 1898 (27 July) An incoming registered letter from Cape of Good Hope to Shanghai, via Durban, bearing the Cape of Good Hope 2 1/2p ultramarine strip of 3 (Sc57) tied by ‘REGISTERED/EAST.LONDON’ oval cancel, alongside large ‘R’ black oval registered chop mark. On reverse with ‘DURBAN/29.7.98’, ‘HONG KONG/10.9.98’ transit and the unusual ‘SHANGHAI/REGISTERED/14.9.96’ arrival frame chop in British type. Most of the incoming letters to British China Concession were tied by the British Post Office Treaty Ports cancellations, this kind of British type arrival marking is scarce, and also a rare incoming cover from Africa, very rare.
