COLLEGE OF FINE ARTS AND COMMUNICATION APRIL & MAY ISSUE SPRING 2018
LETTER FROM THE DEAN DR. JOHN FLEMING
COMMUNICATION STUDIES [PG. 6]
ART AND DESIGN [PG. 2]
As the spring 2018 semester comes to a close, it is appropriate that our cover photo pays tribute to a colleague whose extraordinary career is also coming to a close. After a Texas State
career of 32 years of award-winning teaching and internationally acclaimed scholarship, Dr. Steven A. Beebe announced his retirement from full- time teaching… and typifying Steve’s sustained excellence, as this issue was going to press it was announced that he has just been named a Piper Professor by the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation. (Since 1962, only 23 Texas State faculty have earned this honor, with Steve being only the 2nd from our College.) The ensuing 20+ pages exemplify faculty, student, and alumni excellence. Faculty have won national awards (Moore p.4, Horan and Farris p.7, Devlin p.13, Glasheen p.18) and earned National Endowment for the Arts grants (p. 15), while students have excelled regionally and nationally (Advertising p.13, Music p.17, and Theatre p. 21). Likewise, alumni continue their impactful careers via projects such as Lydia Dobbins ballet program with the San Marcos Housing Authority (p. 11) and Michael Menchaca’s artwork in San Antonio (p.5), as well as Wayne Oquin’s organ concerto heading on tour for its European premiere (p. 17). It is truly a great day to be Bobcat! Finally, congratulations to our nearly 60 masters’ students and over 600 undergraduates who graduated this semester! We are proud of you. Please keep in touch.
