WESSA Annual Report 2023 - 2024 DP

The Green Coast programme contributes to coastal conservation and eco-tourism by ensuring the following:

Waste management protocols , emergency pollution plans, and domestic animal controls are strictly followed, in line with relevant beach legislation. Waste discharge sites and new developments are monitored to ensure compliance with legislative requirements. Environmental monitoring is carried out at each site according to a structured plan, with citizen science projects enabling local communities to contribute meaningfully. Some sites employ fixed-point photography and beach profile monitoring, both of which have the potential to support municipal climate change strategies and early warning systems. Environmental education – A minimum of two environmental education activities are conducted at each site annually. Coastal clean-ups – At least two clean-up events are held at each site annually. Signage and facilities – Information and safety signage are prominently displayed, and beach facilities are well-maintained. Eco-tourism promotion – Nature-based experiences and eco-tourism are actively encouraged.

In partnership with the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment , the Green Coast programme has listed the Chintsa Estuary as part of the National Estuary Water Monitoring Programme. In addition, the “Stop the Strangle” pilot campaign was launched in Chintsa to revitalise the fishing line bin initiative of the Dyer Island Trust. This campaign raises awareness, drives action, and promotes advocacy to tackle the problem of “ghost fishing.” The campaign is set to be rolled out across all Green Coast sites for the 2024/25 season, with a robust partnership now established with the Sustainable Seas Trust, which serves as the national data repository for bin collections.
