The ChildSafe Project

A Addressing child exploitation in coastal tourist areas: The ChildSafe Project, a crucial component of WESSA’s commitment to sustainable tourism, focuses on safeguarding vulnerable children in key tourist areas along the Durban and Amanzimtoti coastlines. This initiative addresses the pressing issues of child begging and exploitation, enhancing the safety of both the children and visitors to these popular destinations.

Since 2019, the project has been supported by the World Childhood Foundation, with funding now extended through 2025. In partnership with ICare, a local child welfare organisation, WESSA has reached over 280 street children, ensuring they receive proper care and support through various interventions. ICare’s outreach provides immediate assistance, rehabilitation, and skills training, offering long-term solutions to break the cycle of street life. ICare’s broader mission is to create a South Africa where no child is forced to live on the streets, and its comprehensive programmes are integral to addressing the multifaceted needs of these children.

Community engagement and strategic partnerships

The ChildSafe Project implements the internationally recognised ChildSafe model developed by Friends International. It also encourages strong community engagement by involving local businesses, NGOs, and residents in the collective effort to create secure, child-friendly environments. Trained beach workers and local traders serve as vigilant protectors, actively monitoring and reporting any children at risk.
