WESSA Phase 1 report to HHCT_28.10.2021

7.7.2 Opportunity: Government and bilateral donors are looking for reliable trustworthy partners Strategy: build on existing strong reputations with Government and bilateral donor agencies • Position WESSA to be ready for a national call for providers of catchment management extension services, building on WESSA’s strengths as an environmental education implementer • Become the preferred implementer for projects that have a direct connection to WESSA’s Theory of Change, mission and brand (see previous sections) while eliminating those with an indirect or vague connection • Avoid being seen as a mere project manager and implementer to achieve other organizations’ objectives – unless these are well aligned with WESSA’s mission and Theory of Change. Strategy: present clear value propositions • Formulate clear value propositions (rallying & capacitating society for the environment we all want) and communicate these to potential donors and investors. [Existing strengths, e.g. professionalism, good governance, reliability, grassroots presence should remain part of this value proposition]. 7.7.3 Opportunity: Corporates are looking for ways to strengthen and validate their ESG credentials Strategies • Build on Blue Flag certification scheme to offer credible ESG certification and compliance services to corporates • Offer training services in environmentally sustainable good practice to corporates, governments and other stakeholders who have high willingness to pay for these to meet ESG requirements; South African companies fear being shut out of international markets if they fail to address their carbon footprint • River and wetland restoration as carbon and biodiversity offset programmes funded by e.g. the mining and transport sectors • Develop technological solutions to prevent over-utilization of land and marine resources in support of a sustainable biodiversity economy • Advise and accredit listed corporations to report on their environmental, social and Governance sustainability credentials • Develop tools and advisory services to proactively promote sustainable mining and infrastructure development • Adapt Blue Flag Beach and Green Coast criteria to develop sustainability certification and accreditation systems for large corporations, mining houses and manufacturing industries • Offer tools and training courses to corporates and government to learn about environmental good practice e.g. NORAD https://grants.mfa.no/#call/2361/details
