permission to speak into the life of another. The influence of such individuals can be not only thought provoking, but at times, life changing. I have never believed that an individual who doesn’t attend church or have the opportunity to do so is somehow excluded from being a legitimate member of any particular faith. However, through seasons of experience working long shifts and weekends, and in looking back many years later on how I was affected, I have learned and now believe that the opportunity to gather together in fellowship, education, and conversation regarding our faith and values is incredibly important and beneficial to our values and faith maintenance, development and growth. Hebrews 10:23-25 NIV says: “Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”

In our often extremely busy lives where so many depend on us, we often sacrifice opportunities for personal growth and en richment to tasks and obligations that seem to be all consuming. But as we have probably all been told in our careers, ‘you can’t help your partner if you don’t make it safely to the call’. Likewise, airlines constantly reinforce the message to, ‘put on your own oxygen mask first so you can help your children and others with their needs’. Perhaps, deliberately and intentionally carving out time in our hectic schedules for gathering together with loved ones and our faith and valued families is one of the most responsible, valuable and even necessary commitments we can make to heal and grow in healthy ways in order best serve others and ourselves.

Blessings to you and yours,

Kevin Jensen Chaplain
