The apparatus incorporates a variable focus flexible lens, which models the crystalline lens of the eye - the adjustment (accommodation) of this lens is via a mechanical stress ring which simulates the action of the ciliary muscles. The retina is represented by a moveable white screen, sliding along the optical axis, which simulates eye defects (myopia, hyperopia). A lens support is located at the front of the eye model to enable corrective lenses to be positioned in front of the eye lens.
