1 FOOD CALORIMETER Designed to investigate the energy value of food stuffs e.g peanuts. A peanut or other high energy food sample is burnt in the crucible using heat from the electrical element, which is powered by any low voltage power supply. Connecting a joulemeter or voltmeter and ammeter allows the value of energy required to burn the peanut to be recorded. The glass vessel when filled with water provides 2 functions: as an insulator and a heat exchanger to measure the resulting rise in temperature. A filter pump is connected to the top of the spiral copper tube to draw off the combustion products. For a more efficient burn, the air inlet tube in the base can be connected to an oxygen supply. A metal stirrer is supplied to agitate the water, to ensure uniform temperature distribution and measurement. By measuring the total rise in water temperature, total energy supplied, and by using the specific heat capacity of water, the energy transferred from the peanut can be determined. The unit consists of 2 main parts: The base plate with crucible and heating element; The glass vessel with the spiral copper tube. Additional equipment needed: Low voltage power supply, joulemeter or voltmeter & ammeter, thermometer, filter pump, rubber tubing and a retort stand. Optionally, a source of oxygen can be used to ensure complete combustion. Cat No. Description Price Per HCA-250-100 Food Calorimeter 116.12 ea. 2 LASCELLS LEMON LED A low powered LED comes securely contained within a robust tube for protection. Suitable for use with lemons as ‘batteries’. Zinc and copper pieces for connections are not included but are available separately. Crocodile clips, leads and lemons not included. Cat No. Description Price Per HEC-415-100 Lemon LED 5.83 ea. 3 LEMON CLOCK Simply add your own lemon to turn this kit into an amazing lemon powered clock. Supplied with two metal rods consisting of copper and zinc and an LCD clock. Cat No. Description Price Per HEC-400-100 Lemon Clock 9.26 ea. 4 CROOKES RADIOMETER Perfect for demonstrating the conversion of radiant energy into mechanical energy. Comprising a partly evacuated glass bulb of about 70mm diameter with a fine pivot on which a rotor with a set of four mica vane arms is delicately balanced. Each mica vane has one side painted matt black with the other side bright. On exposing to sunlight or sufficiently bright incandescent light source, the absorption of radiant energy by the blackened side of the vanes sets up a temperature differential with respect to the bright sides, which causes net force to be exerted by the air molecules on the blackened side making the vanes rotate with their bright faces leading. Mounted on base. Cat No. Description Price Per HSE-050-100 Crookes Radiometer 12.80 ea. 5 LASCELLS ELECTRO MECHANICAL SYSTEM A fool-proof system for allowing students to investigate the raising of a mechanical load by an electrical input.A small d.c. electric motor is geared down to rotate a shaft around which a thread is wound. The thread is attached to a load and the students time the lifting process while noting the electrical input to the system. It enables investigations to be carried out into efficiency, energy transfer, power etc.Useful at all levels from KS3 to Post 16. A limit switch automatically stops the motor when the load reaches the top. Supplied complete with detailed instructions for many investigations at different levels. Cat No. Description Price Per HEC-225-100 Electro Mechanical System 83.78 ea.
