1 CONDUCTIVITY APPARATUS Designed to show how different materials conduct heat at different rates, this apparatus comprises four metal strips, one each of copper, iron, aluminium and brass, fixed to a frame at 90 degrees to each other, with the strips almost touching at the centre of the frame. The outer ends of the strips have small recesses for holding paraffin/candle wax. As the four strips are heated at the centre, the wax melts at different rates, demonstrating the relative difference in thermal conductivity. Alternatively, drawing pins or marbles can be set into wax in the recesses and the apparatus turned upside down before heating, so that the embedded objects can be seen to fall as the wax melts. CARE: Some of the metals have melting points lower than the temperature of a hot (blue) Bunsen flame, so heating of the metal strips should only be done moderately.
