1 HALF LIFE ANALOGUE SET A classic experiment that gives a very good analogy with radioactive decay. Each of the 500 small plastic cubes has one face identified (black colour) to represent radioactive nuclei which have ‘decayed’ when this face is uppermost. Thus, as the cubes are shaken and thrown out onto the desk, some will have an unmarked face upwards while others will have the marked face uppermost. The ones with the marked face represent the decayed nuclei – these are removed, counted and the number noted. The ‘decayed’ nuclei are then kept to one side before the next throw. The process is then repeated until only a few cubes remain. The results give an excellent exponential decay curve. The idea of the random way in which the cubes fall can be compared with the random nature of radioactive decay. Supplied as a set of 500 small plastics cubes. Cat No. Description Price Per RAD-295-100 Half Life Analogue Demonstration Set 31.48 pk 2 LASCELLS MULTI-WIRE SPARK DETECTOR This apparatus gives a memorable and dramatic demonstration of the ionising properties of alpha particles. Alpha particles have short range but are very effective at ionising air. In this apparatus a number of fine wires are supported above a metal plate to form two electrodes separated by a small air gap. 4mm terminals allow an EHT supply to be connected and when the potential across the gap reaches about 4500V occasional ionised particles cause a visible and audible spark to occur. If an alpha source is brought near, the sparking dramatically increases, showing the presence of ionised particles. The short range and poor penetrating properties of alpha radiation can be easily demonstrated. An EHT power supply capable of providing a negative potential is required. Please note an alpha source is not included. Cat No. Description Price Per RAD-765-100 Multi-Wire Spark Detector 92.11 ea. 3 ALPHA PARTICAL COUNTER/SPARK COUNTER A highly visible instrument for showing the random nature of radiation. Produces very bright sparks when alpha particles are ionised on the circular wire grid. Comes complete with sliding holder for the radiation source and an accurate scale to measure the effects of distance between the source and the grid. Requires a 5kV Power Supply and a Scaler Timer/Frequency Meter plus 5kV red and black leads. See previous page Cat No. Description Price Per RAD-500-100 Spark Counter 323.62 ea. 4 ALPHA PARTICLE SCATTERING APPARATUS A low cost apparatus for the demonstration of the Rutherford scattering by means of a gravitational analog of inverse square law repulsion. Comprises a wooden launching ramp about 300 x 50 x 105mm (L x W x H) with a guiding groove running down its curved face. Along its length there are index marks at 40, 60, 80 and 100mm above the base that provides 4 pre-determined launching heights. Also included is a spun aluminium hill about 280mm diameter and 60mm high along with a 19mm steel ball. The shape of the aluminium hill has been carefully determined by varying its height above the base line by an amount arrived on the basis of the reciprocal of the radius. Cat No. Description Price Per RAD-050-100 Alpha Particle Scattering Apparatus 60.16 ea.
