T he 982M was purchased by Cemex El Paso for their Vado, NM Quarry. It was part of a global RFP that also included a 770G haul truck, 962M loader, and two 236D skid steer loaders for the El Paso operations. The loaders and haul truck are enrolled in Cat Job Site Solutions (JSS) where Wagner and Cat jointly monitor equipment performance and health and provide daily reports to Cemex management. This helps Cemex improve the profitability and performance of many aspects of their quarries. Cemex El Paso is one of several Cemex operations enrolled in JSS, including the Cemex operations in Lyons, CO. Cemex management said that they selected Wagner and Cat over other lower priced competitors because of the level of service they receive and the outstanding relationship they have with Wagner and Cat. This relationship continues to grow and has made Cemex a very loyal Wagner customer. In addition to the recent RFP, Cemex has purchased two 980K loaders and three 770 haul trucks over the past three years. All of these machines are enrolled in JSS.

CONTRACTOR BUILDS HARDSCAPES WITH CAT ® MACHINES

F rom the beginning, Stutsman-Gerbaz Earthmoving, Inc. has been instrumental in the growth of Aspen, Snowmass, and the Roaring Fork Valley of Colorado. Founded by Dick Stutsman and Jerry Gerbaz in 1960, the company has been an integral part of the Valley’s most prominent projects and custom homes, excavating well over 2,000 of the most elegant homes in Aspen and Snowmass Village. The founders began doing small excavations, and worked as ski lift operators for Aspen Ski Corp. in the winter season. As the business grew, Dick and Jerry began taking on bigger projects, such as the Miners Building (a local hardware store), which is still one of the deepest foundations in the area more than 50 years later. Today, Stutsman-Gerbaz is operated by Dick’s son, Dave Stutsman, daughters Julie Garner and Lisa Thorpe, and Charlie Montover, vice president of field operations. Dick’s grandson, Shay, is a third-generation vice president.

foundations for new homes and commercial businesses. It has 10 to 15 jobs working at any given time during the peak construction season. Stutsman-Gerbaz kept its crews working through the last recession, even as profit margins were squeezed. “We definitely had to tighten our belts,” Shay says. “We learned how to do things more efficiently, and we became a lot more conscientious about fuel consumption. Weathering the downturn has made us a much leaner, meaner organization.” High Profile Job Last summer, Stutsman-Gerbaz performed a 50-foot excavation for a new home in downtown Aspen that includes an underground basketball court and swimming pool. While local speculation centered on the identity of the new homeowner, Stutsman-Gerbaz went about the task of performing the excavation in a high-profile area of the ski resort town. Crews began the work with a Cat 325C L Hydraulic Excavator, digging to a maximum depth of about 23 feet. At that point, the company utilized a crane and box setup, with a 939C Track Loader performing the majority of the excavation and loading dirt into a custom-built box designed by Shay, which was then lifted out by the crane and dumped directly into waiting trucks. Remaining cleanup work in the excavation pit was done by a Cat 303.5C Mini Excavator. “We came up with a different way of doing it,” Shay says. “With a long-reach excavator, we would have only removed three quarters of a cubic yard in every pass, whereas with a box, we were able to load six cubic yards in each pass.” Lifting the conventional way from above that depth was taking crews 12-13 minutes to load

to the truck with the 325C L Hydraulic Excavator, Shay says. By switching over to the crane and

WHAT HE LIKES ABOUT HIS CAT DEALER “The service that we get from Wagner Equipment Co. is second to none,” says Shay Stutsman, vice president of Stutsman- Gerbaz Earthmoving. “Salesman from other equipment manufacturers don’t like coming to our shop, because we have been treated so well by Caterpillar and Wagner that there is absolutely no reason to look at other makes of equipment.” WHATHE LIKESABOUTCAT ® EQUIPMENT “What I really like about the Cat ® equipment is the durability, the ease of use, and just the thought that goes into engineering each piece of equipment, not only from an operating standpoint, but also when it comes to performing maintenance,” Stutsman says. “I appreciate how Caterpillar tries to encompass everyone who is going to use that machine.” He also likes the speed and power of the hydraulic system. “The lifting power of the smaller machines has been fantastic — we have a 953D Track Loader.” I love the loadsensing feature, along with the constant net horsepower feature, which allows for continual transmission speed while not losing power with the excavating hydraulics when both systems are engaged at the same time under heavy load,” Stutsman says. “It’s a lot more user friendly, and increases the speed and efficiency compared to previous models.”

“We have always strived to be the best in this area,” says Shay, who started operating construction equipment 20 years ago when he was still in middle school. “What I have learned from my Dad is that doing a good job is of the utmost importance, and that goes all the way back to upholding the standard that was set when my grandfather started the company. In a small town like this, our reputation means everything.” Stutsman-Gerbaz maintains a fleet of 30 machines, with the majority comprised of Cat ® equipment. One aspect of upholding its reputation involves keeping its machines cleaned and waxed, as the company performs a good share of its work in the upscale commercial setting of downtown Aspen. With about 45 employees in the summer and 25 to 30 in the winter months, Stutsman-Gerbaz works within a 30-mile radius of Aspen. The company’s bread and butter involves excavating

box method, it sped cycle times up to about 10 minutes. A 939C Track Loader was lowered in the hole to do the main excavation, while the 303.5C Mini Excavator cleaned up leftover dirt piles and shaved the earthen sidewalls so crews could put the lagging on. Once the deeper excavation was complete, Stutsman-Gerbaz backfilled the pool walls and installed the foundation drain underneath the concrete slab. Stutsman-Gerbaz utilizes a Cat 314 Hydraulic Excavator, as well as four mini excavators to perform its diverse excavating needs. “The Cat 314 that we recently purchased

has become one of our most heavily utilized machines,” Shay says. “Downtown Aspen is very small and a lot of our projects take place there. So the low impact rubber tracks have saved us from putting it on a trailer to move it around. I would say it has been an extremely versatile machine in our equipment fleet.” Versatile Attachments The high volume of commercial work the company performs in Aspen enables Stutsman- Gerbaz to easily transition from one type of job to another. And with interchangeable Cat attachments at their disposal, operators can easily and quickly switch attachments between machines. “We can switch from forks or buckets to snow

enhancing their ability to perform multiple tasks. Stutsman-Gerbaz attributes the company’s longevity to a high number of long-term employees, four of whom have been with the company for 30 years or more. “We have been able to retain guys for so long, and it goes a long way in entrusting them to a do a good job,” Shay says. “They know how important it is to do it right the first time.” Stutsman-Gerbaz considers it an honor to carry on the family tradition of quality work. He gives a nod to the equipment that has helped the company get to where it is today. “Our Cat equipment makes it all possible,” Shay says. “To me, there is absolutely no reason to look at another brand of equipment. I won’t even demo competing machines.”

plows — it has just been fantastic,” Shay says. “And we can use those same attachments on a skid steer and a compact track loader. We just bought a snowplow for the 908H Compact Wheel Loader and it fits on the skid steer, too. It has made some of our downtown and utility work go so much faster and smoother.” By utilizing a variety of versatile attachments, the company can operate with fewer machines by

M SERIES WHEEL LOADERS TIER 4

COMPLIANT, MORE FUEL EFFICIENT

T he new Cat ® M Series Medium Wheel Loaders provide your business with what would have been impossible just a few short years ago — reduced emissions, better fuel efficiency, and improved performance. The 966M, 966M XE, 972M, 972M XE, and 980M Wheel Loaders — along with the new addition to the line, the 982M— meet EPA Tier 4 Final emission standards. But that is just part of the story. XE technology — utilized in the 966M XE, and 972M XE — results in 25 percent lower fuel consumption compared to machines with traditional torque converters, simplifies operation with a two-pedal design, and provides high performance at all speeds. Powertrains for the 966M, 972M, 980M, and 982M feature lock-up clutch torque converters as standard equipment. This matches engine power and hydraulics to improve performance and helps lower fuel consumption by 10 percent.

All M Series machines feature a main hydraulic valve that is a mono-block with an integrated ride-control section. The mono-block design reduces weight and has 40 percent fewer potential leak points.

Contact your Wagner Machine Sales Representative to learn more about the ways the new Cat M Series Medium Wheel Loaders can help you reduce fuel consumption while meeting Tier 4 final emission standards.

Watch The Indicators Maintain Competitive Edge With Hydraulic System Diagnostics

I t’s easy to overlook the hydraulic system when completing machine walkarounds, as it’s not always visible from checkpoint areas. That doesn’t mean it’s any less important. A machine’s hydraulic system determines how much material you move and how fast you move it. As your dealer, we can help you detect system issues earlier by providing simple diagnostic tests and acceptable specifications. The hydraulic system is comprised of pumps, motors, hoses, cylinders, and hydraulic fluid. Depending on the operating environment and maintenance practices, components may show signs of wear as early as 2,500 hours. We recommend that the operator consider factors that may indicate issues with the hydraulic system, such as: • Cylinder drift (unactuated cylinder movement) • Tracking (experiencing tracking pull one way or another while in forward motion) • Inconsistent swinging motion with the equipment (jittery movement) • System noise (pump or relief valve squealing) • Increased system heat (above 190° F) • External cylinder, hose, pump, or motor leakage

Your competitive advantage depends on your machine’s ability to maintain productivity and your operator’s proficiency in recognizing when to service something before it fails. Preserving your hydraulic system by acting on the indicators listed above can help you avoid costly repairs and reduce downtime. Wagner can help you perform simple machine operation tests to gauge if it’s time to service the hydraulic system before repair costs increase. For more information about maintaining or assessing your hydraulic system, please contact us.

CG LINE OF GAS GENERATOR SETS T he recently introduced CG product line — consisting of the CG132, CG170 and CG260 — delivers reliable, efficient gas-fueled power generation. Flexible, CG generator sets can operate on gases of varying quality, including natural gas, biogases (such as landfill, digester and sewage gas), coke gas, and coal mine methane. The new generator sets provide world-class total owning and operating costs and can be used in a variety of applications, including industrial and commercial facilities, utilities, wastewater treatment plants, landfills, mines, greenhouses, and farms. The CG product line is designed to be operated with complete cogeneration/tri-generation systems and can achieve total plant efficiencies of up to 90 percent. These low-emission generator sets can be fitted with exhaust after-treatment systems to further reduce emission levels. Delivering the lowest owning and operating costs is achieved by: • Establishing precise control of combustion in individual cylinders — a technology that also increases generator set reliability by balancing the load of each cylinder across the engine. • Spark plug maintenance at 4,000 hours is among the longest service intervals in the industry for natural gas engines. The maintenance intervals for oil changes and spark plug replacement occur at the same time, reducing unit downtime. • Optimized valve stem seals and anti-bore polishing rings reduce oil consumption.

CG132

CG170

All CG products feature the Total Electronic Management (TEM) control system, which is designed to optimize the performance of the generator set while being powerful enough to control an entire power plant. This single master control can operate many accessories, such as cogeneration water pumps, fuel monitoring systems, and downstream electrical distribution systems from

CG260

a single touch-screen interface. The TEM system has a wide range of remote access options, enabling user control from a single touch-screen panel in the control room or any Internet-connected PC.

Make the Switch When Switchgear Retrofit Makes Sense

O ver time, electrical systems can become outdated. Sometimes it’s a case of an aging system that no longer performs as intended, increased needs have outstripped capacity, or electrical components contain obsolete parts. With upgrades and changes to their facilities, facility managers may want to consider a switchgear retrofit in order to improve performance and bring their electrical power systems up to date. Cat Switchgear Integration Anyone wanting to modernize their paralleling switchgear, whether it is Cat ® brand or non-Cat, should consider a retrofit. This includes hospitals, financial institutions, data centers, industrial facilities and manufacturing plants. You are a candidate for a retrofit if any of the following are present: • Very old switchgear

Retrofits can involve the replacement of circuit breakers, protective relays, and controls. A retrofit also encompasses systems integration and

engineer will determine if an upgrade is available for your existing system, or if a complete new control system is needed. The next option is a complete system overhaul to modernize your facility. A switchgear retrofit can include changes to hardware and software. In many cases, the old system is gutted and new technology is installed within the existing power envelope structures. A Wagner Power Systems engineering specialist custom designs the retrofit and oversees its installation.

data communication, and can include electrical maintenance and testing as options depending on age and past service history. You may want more information tied together, such as communicating with Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS), power plant fuel sources, change system to load management versus standby operation, or load priority changes. financial losses, ranging from thousands to many millions of dollars. Uptime is their primary concern. Infrared inspection is being successfully used on a regular basis to check for electrical problems in these systems that, if not detected, could cause costly downtime. This is an example of one of the many thermographic applications that both increases uptime and saves money. A large electric utility company used thermal imaging to monitor a hot bushing connection on a 230 kV main transformer carrying power from their primary generator. Shutting down was, by far, the last choice Reduce Risk

and not considered a viable option. Failure of the component would have had catastrophic costs and consequences. Through frequent monitoring with thermal imaging, the plant was able to accurately evaluate the situation and take corrective action to manage the problem without failure. Due to their infrared thermography efforts, the bushing made it to the next planned shutdown when repairs were successfully completed.

What is Infrared Thermography? Infrared Thermography is a state-of-the art method of inspecting and diagnosing of electrical systems and components to identify “hot spots” and potential electrical system failures.

facilities rely heavily on the health of their primary electrical system, as well as their Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems and emergency generators, which provide back-up in the event of a power loss. Any downtime from an outage can generate
