BERGDORF GOODMAN WISHES OUR CITY A HAPPY 300 YEARS

L ast summer, when New York City's landmark department store, Bergdorf Goodman, unveiled their Fifth Avenue windows, it was New Orleans that took center stage. In partnership with the New Orleans Tourism Marketing Corporation, the storied retailer dedicated all five of their premier avenue windows to the celebration of our city's 300th birthday. This was the very first time for such a partnership, but it makes perfect sense . . . one great American city honoring the greatest city in the world, and I'll leave it for you to decide which is which. Under the direction of David Hoey, Bergdorf's Senior Director of Visual Presentation, splendid installations captured the exuberance and optimism of the Big Easy through detailed depictions of our music, culture, and

iconic images. Thousands of beads, artistic papier-mâché sculptures, and well-researched insider jokes created multi-layered works of art that featured world-renowned fashion houses alongside the many traditions we New Orleanians hold dear. Resplendent with alligators, carnival masks, and jazz instruments, you can almost hear the drumbeats of Mardi Gras parades. I would be hard-pressed to choose a favorite window, but for me it is the lowly crawfish elevated in a "scientific" way and the simplicity of the made-to-scale shotgun house. My grandmother had a rescued Catahoula hound; we still sit on her porch with the neighbors; and after all, isn't this what it all "boils" down to in the city that care forgot? Thank you Bergdorf Goodman for getting it all so right.
