"My dining room becomes the wrapping room between Thanksgiving and Christmas," Heidi explains. "I wait 'til most of my shopping is done and, once the 50s Christmas music is playing in the background, I start the process by doing all the paper first, no ribbons or tags." She buys paper from high and low sources, looking for matte solids, beautiful florals, birchbark, and old-fashioned Santa paper. "Once that is out of the way, I clear away the long tubes of paper and the scraps and take my time deciding on ribbons. I'll shift and swap ribbons and tags so I end up with a pile of gifts that look nice together but aren't all

the same." She buys grosgrain and velvet ribbon in bulk – varying widths in greens, pinky-reds, and turquoise for Hanukkah gifts – and saves tinsel-y ribbon from gifts they receive. "Lately, I've started wrapping tops and bottoms of sturdy boxes so they can be opened without tearing the paper and can be kept as part of the gift," she explains. "I try to take my time, not be rushed – reminding myself that I only get to do this once a year. Kate and I aren't thinking of it as a task that has to be checked off but as a creative opportunity. I love a nicely wrapped gift and the effort that goes into it. I guess I just assume that others will too."
