What kind of person do I need to be? You should have an enquiring mind and a logical approach to problem solving. An ability to analyse complex data, understand technical information, interpret statistics and come up with creative solutions to problems will stand you in good stead. You should also be a good communicator capable of explaining technical plans and difficult concepts to people who may not have specialist knowledge. Having an eye for detail and being accurate in your work will also be impor tant in achieving successful outcomes. You should be confident in making decisions and for some job roles have an interest in business, economics or regulations. Honesty and discretion may be required depending upon the nature of your work. More often than not you will also need the ability to multi-task. How do I get there? For most careers you will need to achieve a degree and where appropriate study for a postgraduate qualification. In some cases your degree will need to be approved by a professional body that governs the industry. Some employers will require you to sit professional exams before you become fully qualified and may expect you to become a member of an institute or a faculty. Others will accept GCSEs and A levels for on-the-job training oppor tunities that will allow you to achieve a professional qualification related to your chosen career path. Apprenticeships may offer an alternative route subject to availability.

What skills will I learn? Studying mathematics will teach you to think logically and deal with highly abstract concepts. You’ll learn how to manipulate precise and intricate ideas while following complex reasoning to construct a logical argument. You’ll discover how to conduct observational studies, per form experiments, analyse data, identify patterns, form conclusions and communicate solutions to mathematical problems. Many career areas will require you to apply mathematics to the physical world. Whether you are dealing with engineering principles, predicting market trends, balancing accounts or predicting the weather for tomorrow, your skills as a mathematician will be invaluable.
