AIR Awards 2014: Remi (centre) triumphs

Let’s find out on November 26! I remember him appearing at a JB Hi-Fi conference a couple of years back when No Diggity was just starting to be heard: great to see he’s come so far in a relatively short time. Also brilliant to see some artists heavily featured in STACK t his year getting up as well: from Sheppard and Dan Sultan to Sia and Vance Joy . Novermber is always a big month in Melbourne for music: After heading up to Brisbane for Big Sound in September, we have the Face the Music conference happening this month, along with the AWME (AustralasianWorldwide Music Expo), and Melbourne MusicWeek (everything from Black Cab to legendary DJs E very month we take a look at the hot vinyl trucking out the doors at selected JB Hi-Fi stores. This month we head up to Newcastle, and chat to music buyer Mitch Eaton about what’s doing well on record in the NSW industrial punk-rock town. “The newAlt-J album, This Is All Yours, has been doing pretty well. There are two versions, both with different coloured vinyl, but it’s a lucky dip – you don’t know which colour your record is until you open it up,” he says. Another release that’s selling well on vinyl was created with technology even older than records: the recent NeilYoung album A Letter Home was recorded at JackWhite’sThird Man Studios on a voice-o-gram, a recording set-up that cuts the performance direct to disc (it’s not even recorded on tape, let alone digitally!). Other releases doing great at JB Newcastle represent a strong local interest in the Newcastle punk scene, with a great number of releases from Jen Buxton of the band Like Alaska moving off the shelves. Like Alaska are signed to Melbourne label Poison City, whereThe Smith Street Band, Harmony, and Luca Brasi have

Optimo , and German legends Tangerine Dream ). Meanwhile, are The Rolling Stones still the ‘Greatest Rock’n’Roll Band in theWorld’? I guess I’ll find out when I see them at Victoria’s legendary Hanging Rock this month. I’m also going to check out Sydneysider Jack Ladder and his bandThe Dreamlanders at the Northcote Social Club on November 7; his new album Playmates is produced byThe Presets’ KimMoyes and looks to be a cracker. Lastly, I’m also off to see recent STACK cover stars Hilltop Hoods on November 14 at Margaret Court Arena in Melbourne. See you next month and keep your head in the music until then! The JB Listener

also found homes. Eaton says vinyl for those acts have also done brisk business. “It’s a pretty wide variety of music that sells on vinyl at our store,” he says. “We do well with some of the local punk stuff, but also lots of blues and metal catalogue releases. I’m expecting the older crowd to pick up the new Pink Floyd album, and we’ve had pre-orders from older Led Zeppelin fans for the
