Wire & Cable ASIA – November/December 2014

India calling for its fifth international wire exhibition Attention in this issue falls firmly on the burgeoning market of India, and more specifically WIRE & CABLE INDIA. The figures and statistics surrounding this huge slice of the Asian continent are staggering. From its geography (the seventh largest country in the world by area), a population of 1.2 billion people and an infrastructure financing of $1 trillion over the next five years. The economy is thought, by experts, to grow five-fold in the next 20 years, and that is after a spurt of seven per cent in GDP this year alone. Six per cent of that GDP is down to the automotive industry with a turnover of $73 billion. Two years from now that is expected to have doubled, and that is one growth region that will appeal to the wire and cable industry. Additionally, telecommunications and construction all play a massive part in India’s rapid expansion and all three sectors have seen growth of around 25 per cent annually.

WIRE & CABLE INDIA has grown substantially in-line over recent years, and that is expected again after 28 th to 30 th October in Mumbai. Our coverage of the exhibition starts on page 57 and please feel free to visit Stand 1C14 to collect your free copy of Wire & Cable ASIA .

Advanced Cable Asia heads for Shanghai!

New national sales manager Conneaut Industries Inc has named John Mancinelli as its new national sales manager.

INTEGER Research, UK, is staging the third Advanced Cable Asia conference from 2 nd to 4 th December in Shanghai, China. Asia’s economic situation remains robust, with moderate growth forecast to continue in China and India and a stable outlook across the Southeast Asian region. As the region’s largest economy, China makes up a quarter of the global wire and cable demand and continues to have the largest cable production market in the world. On-going projects such as the ‘West–East Electricity Transfer’ and the expanding high-voltage power grid network have been driving a growth in demand for advanced power cables, while high-end fibre optic cables are increasingly required for the ‘12 th Five Year’ projects like ‘Broadband China’ and IT data centre infrastructure. However, Integer Research has lowered its projection for growth in Chinese wire and cable demand slightly to 3.5 per cent year-on-year between 2013 and 2018, which reflects the Chinese government’s policy on market consolidation and sustainable growth. It is believed that the Chinese wire and cable market will need to have a new round of market reshuffling in the next few years in order to clean up the overcapacity and poor quality production. To survive in this extremely competitive market place, many Chinese wire and cable producers recognise the need to implement more effective strategies to differentiate and stand-out, including expansion into high-skilled sectors, stricter quality control schemes, and advanced automation of manufacturing processes. The South-East Asia market, as a whole, is expected to be one of the fastest-growing regions in the world, but the situation does vary country by country. Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia are leading the way, while opportunities are also being seen in Myanmar, the Philippines and Singapore. Indonesia and Thailand, in particular, have been making large-scale investment into the sophisticated power transmission and telecommunication network infrastructure, which will trigger a huge demand for advanced power cables, telecom cables and fibre optic products.

pic to come

❍ New national

sales manager John Mancinelli

A global supplier of speciality fibres used in applications for wire and cable, magnet wire, composites and industrial markets, Conneaut processes high performance industrial yarns, binder yarns, ripcords, braiding yarns and serving yarns. Its product line includes E-glass, S2 glass, polyglass, PTFE-coated fibreglass, KlassCore ® , DynaCore ® , ConnCore ® and others. Mr Mancinelli, an industrial engineer, comes from 15 years at AGY, where he was engaged as a product engineer and regional sales manager.

The forecast for production from Integer Research has indicated 6.5 per cent compound annual growth rate in both Indonesia and Thailand by 2018. It is vital for any cable industry stakeholders to plan in advance for these emerging opportunities. More developed markets such as Japan and South Korea are experiencing a recovery to their pre-crisis levels. In the year 2013/2014, Japan consumed over 700k tons of copper for the wire and cable industry and the market almost levelled out. The major challenge for market players there is to understand the fragmentation of both the global and Asian wire and cable markets and to maintain their leading positions in the industry. Advanced Cable Asia 2014 conference will provide the one-stop knowledge-sharing and networking platform for both global and Asian wire and cable executives to discuss the strategies and technologies needed to succeed in the advanced cable markets. The dedicated streams in advanced power cable and fibre optic sectors will identify the key market developments and growth areas for the wire and cable manufacturers, while uncovering the potential opportunities and technology- related demand for suppliers and solution providers. Leading the way in automotive industry

when compared with a traditional system of the same capacity. To further enhance the system the XMH can make the two parts in the same cycle time required for the main part, and separates the two parts along the way through the cell. That means that the second part comes out in no additional time. Basically the two parts are processed together from a single blank and separated in a special forming unit developed by OMCG. Change-over of the production from one part to the other is as simple as in a traditional CNC bending machine and can be virtually zero if the wire/tube material doesn’t change. Where a complete new setting is required – for example when changing material diameter – skilled operators can alter the set-up in less than two hours. Consistency and reliability are key points for the automotive industry and extensive tests have been carried out on the work-cell. The cell can be easily integrated with robot or secondary operation units from third parties. OMCG – Italy Website : www.omcg.com

OMCG presented a world premier at wire 2014 with the XMH, after having developed the new work-cell concept for muffler hangers. This is to provide customers in the automotive industry with flexible, efficient solutions to make hangers in wire and tube from carbon steel or stainless steel. The core of the system is based on the eccentric bending head that provides outstanding bending capabilities, and on the M140 end forming unit that has been appreciated through the years for its highest quality forming. This has been re-engineered and integrated in a 12-axis system with additional bending heads and forming units which reduce cost and cycle time with concurrent operations and overtake the bottleneck of sequential operations with traditional CNC bending machines. With the XMH system customers can make the majority of muffler hanger shapes in less than eight or nine seconds (depending on the cell configuration), even in the case of double head. Compared to the traditional sequential solution the system is, on average, 50 per cent faster. The cell also optimises energy and space occupation, saving about 30 per cent

ICS opts for Advaris system

Prysmian pays €6.2m for shares Prysmian Group has finalised the acquisition of the remaining 34 per cent interest in AS Draka Keila Cables, thereby becoming the sole shareholder of the Estonian cable company. The price of this acquisition amounts to €6.2 million and takes into consi- deration a positive net financial position (cash) of approximately €4.9 million at the end of 2013. Draka Keila Cables reported sales of approximately €53.8 million in 2013 and is expected to deliver growing results in 2014. With six plants in Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Estonia, Prysmian can rely on a prominent presence in the Nordic region. The company is able to offer a wide range of products from submarine and underground high and medium voltage cable systems, to special cable solutions for oil and gas, the marine industry, the renewable energy sector, telecommunication and cablings for the construction sector.

WHEN ICS Industrial Cables Slovakia sro (ICS) was founded in 2005 and moved into its premises in the city of Nitra, Slovakia, it initially made use of Office software like MS-Excel. Part of the Austrian SKG Group, the company specialises in high quality, flexible industrial cables. The company processes an average of 250 to 300 different orders per month, a large proportion of them being customer-specific one-off orders. Inevitably, the self-developed, Excel-based software solution no longer sufficed, and ICS was on the lookout for a ‘software solution for clever cable-makers’. ICS’s sister company SKW (Schwechater Kabelwerke) was also looking for a software system to succeed its inventory control system for cable trading, which had been individually developed over many years. Further development of its own software, or a renewed realisation of individualised software, were rejected for reasons of cost and time. Right from the start, both companies were looking for a standard software system with an industry-specific orien- tation. They found it at Advaris Informationssysteme GmbH in Bruchsal, Germany. Advaris has been present in the market since 1997, supporting major international enterprises as well as small and medium manufacturers. SKW decided on the Advaris merchandise management system. Ever since 2010, the software which has been in the background helping to plan, monitor and document the complex processes at ICS in Nitra is the Advaris Cable complete integrated system. “The production of industrial cables is a world of its own,” said ICS managing director

inventory management in the cable and wire industry. WMS supports order processing with functions that are specifically sector optimised, from initial customer contact to delivery and invoicing. Even at the quotation stage the individual lengths, packaging, cutting costs, drum terms and metal agreements are taken into account. Materials planning is also length-based throughout, and inventory management has a complete record of the all the individual spools with their exact cable lengths and, if applicable, the existing length reservations. Stefan Knasko, commenting on the high demands of his sector. This applies particularly to the software environment. “Not all firms offering software solutions for length-based manufacturers are really specialists,” said Advaris CEO Dr Manfred Moser. “If a programmer associates the word ‘twist’ more with a type of dance than with cable manufacturing, it cannot be assumed that he will offer a high performance, sector specific solution.” However, it was just such a solution that was urgently needed in Nitra. “SKW had already decided on the merchandise management system WMS of Advaris Cable, and recommended Advaris to us because of their positive experiences,” said Stefan Knasko. Advaris WMS is a specialised warehouse management sys- tem covering the areas of sales, purchasing and

Hayakawa wires used to help save lives

developing nations to help combat life-threatening illnesses such as polio, as well as maintaining the freshness and preventing the damage of food. Inventor Ian Tansley, of Sure Chill, with investment from UK Business Angel Of The Year 2012 Peter Saunders OBE, has identified a robust, reliable and cost-effective way to store vaccines, foods and drinks in optimum condition. He has developed an entirely new solution and, unlike traditional fridges that require a continual power source, Sure Chill’s technology needs very little power. It can actively cool without power for over 12 days in an ambient temperature of 32°C. The technology also achieves an even temperature throughout the fridge compartment with no stratification. During the development of this radically new technology, Sure Chill manufactured wire harnesses in-house on an ad-hoc basis, which resulted in inconsistencies in production. Hayakawa was approached to redesign the wire harness and create a better solution for the company’s mains powered refrigerator. Technicians at Hayakawa reverse engineered the original sample and implemented a number of value engineered concepts to improve the overall performance whilst achieving a cost effective solution. The project delivered a number of significant improvements in assembly for The Sure Chill Company. Commenting on the successful collaboration, Hayakawa managing director Phill Harry said: “We are proud to be associated with such revolutionary technology produced by a very forward-thinking and dynamic company. “It has been great to work with such a successful and driven Welsh organisation that is helping to save both lives and the planet.” Hayakawa – UK Website : www.hayakawa.co.uk

At the close of 2013, GKD had a total of 653 employees including 23 trainees worldwide (up from 645 in 2012), of which 402 members of staff and 22 trainees were employed at the company headquarters in Düren. “It was our characteristic agility that enabled us to successfully weather the increased volatility of the market last year. Our long-term business strategy of continually rolling out new or improved products faster than the competition and thus reinforcing our strong market position worldwide has proven itself once again,” said GKD director Dr Stephan Kufferath. Especially in Europe, GKD succeeded in enlarging the market shares of all of its business units as against the competition. The main reason for this was the strong focus on product innovations and new fields of application in the sectors of automotive manufacturing, water filtration, corrugated board production and architectural systems solutions. Gebr Kufferath AG – Germany Website : www.gkd.de The CWMC is thematically so far unique on the market and complements conferences organised by professional associations of the wire and cable branch, its suppliers and market research organisations. Wiedenbach Apparatebau GmbH – Germany Website : www.wiedenbach.com

FOR the fourth successive year, Gebr Kufferath AG, Düren has increased its turnover, with 2013 figures showing €69.8m turnover – a rise of 1.3 per cent over 2012. The first quarter 2013 saw the scheduled completion of the substantial investment programme started in 2012. The producer of woven mesh-based media and systems solutions had put another €3.8m into furthering the introduction of the latest fabrication technology and the expansion of production capacity at the parent works in Düren. In 2013, Gebr Kufferath AG – with seven production facilities, numerous offices and worldwide agents – recorded substantial growth in Europe. However, this was to some extent balanced out by delays in acceptance in the USA and in Asia. All of GKD’s business units – Solid Weave (industrial mesh), Weave In Motion (process belt solutions) and Creative Weave (architectural mesh) – contributed to the overall positive results through individual market successes with new products. information about global trends and the likely effects on the wire and cable business, cable marking requirements, the state-of-the-art marking techniques, optical effects of cable codings, properties of insulation polymers and the modifiability by additives, interactions between cable surfaces and marking media as well as economic efficiency and quality control.
