Ulster Rugby vs Glasgow
Official Digital Matchday Programme of Ulster Rugby v Glasgow, Saturday 18th February 2017 in the Guinness PRO 12 competition, Kingspan Stadium. KO 3.00pm
LEADING THE FIELD
Welcome to Kingspan Stadium, the home of Ulster Rugby, as we look forward to yet more PRO12 rugby action this Saturday afternoon with the visit of Glasgow Warriors. I am delighted to welcome you as Ulster Rugby look for back-to-back victories against their Scottish counterparts. The Glasgow Warriors are just three points ahead of Ulster meaning a win would see Ulster leapfrog the top ranked Scottish side and move into fifth place in the table. It’s sure to be a tough game but please join me in providing a warm welcome to the Glasgow squad and travelling supporters. Finally, on behalf of Kingspan, I would like to wish the squad and management of Ulster Rugby every success this afternoon. To you the fans, enjoy the game, lead the way and help ensure this is another superb evening to remember.

PRESIDENT’S WELCOME
In the Guinness PRO12, the Ulster team are currently in 6th place but with a game in hand. It was great to see the Ulster team get back to winning ways with a bonus point win over Edinburgh last weekend. It was also good to see a number of players return to action after long periods out through injury, notably Stuart Olding, Peter Nelson, Alan O’Connor and, in his debut match, Marcell Coetzee. Glasgow Warriors have proved themselves to be formidable opponents and there have been a number of close, hard fought games between the two sides in recent years. Ulster secured a close victory over Glasgow at the Scotstoun Stadium in September and hopefully the confidence from last week’s victory will see Ulster repeat that result today. It was also pleasing to see the Ireland side produce such a comprehensive victory over Italy in Rome last week, following the narrow defeat in Scotland. Whilst it was disappointing that captain Rory Best had to pull out at the last moment with a stomach bug, Ulster fans would have been delighted with the performances of Paddy Jackson and Craig Gilroy. With Rory, Andrew Trimble and Iain Henderson available for Ireland again, selection for the France match will be very interesting! On the domestic front, the Danske Bank Medallion Shield has reached the semi-final stage with The Royal School, Armagh due to play Bangor Grammar School and Portadown College will play Friends' School, Lisburn. Congratulations go to all four teams on getting this far and I wish them all good luck for their semi-final games. Finally, I hope everyone gets behind the Ulster team and enjoys the game today as well as the great facilities at Kingspan Stadium and remember… “Stand Up For The Ulster Men”. John McKibbin President IRFU (Ulster Branch) It gives me great pleasure as President of the IRFU Ulster Branch to welcome everyone to Kingspan Stadium for today’s round 15 match in the Guinness PRO12 Championship. In particular, I am very pleased to welcome the Glasgow Warriors team along with their officials and supporters. PRESIDENT’S WELCOME

Managing Director, PRO12 Rugby Welcome
With the rugby season in full flow I’d like to offer you a very warm welcome to Round 15 of the Guinness PRO12 where I’m sure you’ll get your regular fill of adventurous play and dramatic action. It’s been an excellent season so far for our clubs and unions and whether you’re Italian, Irish, Scottish or Welsh your teams and favourite players have given you something to shout about in the Guinness PRO12, in Europe and in the international arena. On and off the pitch there is a wonderful positivity around our Championship and we still have the the business end of the season to look forward to when semi-final places and Champions Cup berths will all be up for grabs. Although we have seen great consistency from Munster Rugby, Ospreys Rugby and Leinster Rugby all season, each round of action in the Guinness PRO12 brings us something unexpected. The competition among the top six is so intense right now and we saw a perfect example of that when Scarlets travelled to Scotland and took home a priceless victory over Glasgow Warriors in front of a packed house at Scotstoun. It has inched Scarlets above the Warriors into fourth place but Ulster Rugby’s win over Edinburgh Rugby has now put them in position to surge back into Championship contention, particularly as they have a game in hand, too. It’s also really exciting to know that between now and the end of the season we have 12 games involving the top six teams playing against each other. Meanwhile, Edinburgh, Cardiff Blues, Newport-Gwent Dragons and Connacht Rugby will know that they have a chance to make it to the Champions Cup play- offs in May and again there will be plenty of fixtures between that group of clubs as well. It will be fascinating to see where everyone is positioned when Super Saturday arrives in Round 22. The rugby is of course the reason why our supporters chose to attend games every weekend. Now that we’ve passed the halfway point of the season it’s clear that try- scoring and positive play have been a big theme in the Guinness PRO12. Our clubs have produced 421 tries which has us on course for a record-setting campaign. What’s also really encouraging is the record low number of points scored from penalties which shows that our coaches and players are more interested in tries than pointing to the posts. We’ve also seen a rise in broadcast viewers and attendances so never forget that your support is invaluable. Behind the scenes at all our clubs and within our own team at PRO12 Rugby we are all working hard to make sure you enjoy a great day out every time you come to a game. The competition to claim the Championship title ramping up with intensity every week but you still have time to guarantee your place at the Guinness PRO12 Final at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium on May 27. It promises to be an unmissable event and prices start at just €35. Ticket sales have been incredibly strong so far and you can avoid missing out by logging onto www.ticketmaster.ie to get yours. Enjoy the game, Martin Anayi

A MESSAGE FROM MARCELL COETZEE
MARCELL COETZEE
It was a privilege to make my debut last week at Kingspan Stadium in front of the Ulster supporters...
The build-up to the game was emotional for me - I just wanted to get back playing the game I love after 10 months out injured. To be able to do it here in front of a crowd that was so supportive, and to get the win as well, was just the cherry on top for me. I’m very blessed and I would like to thank every supporter that messaged me in the lead up to the Edinburgh game, and afterwards as well. It was a big week for me and the Ulster people made it extra special so thank you very much. Ten months can stack some frustration and aggression in you but it’s all a mental battle at the end of the day. You have to take it day-by-day and feed off any positivity you can get. A big positive for me was getting through my debut game injury free. With playing on a Friday night, it gave me a couple of days to recover over the weekend, which was really beneficial. I could go away and reflect and come Monday morning
I was 100% focused ahead of a tough week of training. There were a couple of other guys coming back to rugby after injury lay-offs - I’ve been rehabbing with guys like Pete (Nelson), Wiehahn (Herbst) and Stu (Olding), so it was great to see them back involved against Edinburgh too. You can play club rugby and do your fitness off the field, but there’s nothing like the real game. As soon as you grow confidence in your body and feel that tempo of the game in your body, that’s when you grow as a player. The more game time we get now with all these guys coming back, the more we will improve. The win last week has given everyone a huge boost. The boys have worked so hard all season and they deserved that result after a difficult run. We’ll build on what we’re doing and hopefully continue winning and growing as a team.

ULSTER RUGBY PROUD TO SUPPORT CARE DAY 2017
Ulster Rugby this week pledged its support for ‘National Care Day 2017’ which champions positive messages about children and young people in care or leaving care throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Young people, staff and volunteers from charity partner, Include Youth, will take to the pitch this evening with the message ‘Proud to Support Young People in Care’. Paddy Mooney, Director at Include Youth, said: “Ulster Rugby’s staff, fans and team have really thrown their muscle behind our #CareDay activities this month and are helping us to raise awareness about our work with young people in, or leaving, care. From donating match tickets to the young people engaged in our projects for their home games, to featuring young people’s stories in the match night programmes throughout February.” Twenty-one-year-old Rico Letang, a care leaver from Belfast who featured in last Friday night’s match programme, is one of the young people attending the Glasgow Warriors match this evening. He said: “At school I participated in football, Gaelic, hurling and cross-country running but I’d love to try rugby. It’s always been
something I would like to do. I watch most Ireland games when they’re on TV, but I’m more of an All Blacks fan secretly. I’m definitely looking forward to the Ulster match, as it’ll be my first time watching a proper match at a stadium.” Fiona Hampton from Ulster Rugby said: “We’re very proud to be able to give these young people their first ever taste of a professional rugby match at Kingspan Stadium and make sure they know that Ulster Rugby and the wider rugby community will welcome them with open arms. “We know through our partnership with Include Youth that many young people who grow up in care miss out on being able to take part in sport due to an unsettled home life or multiple foster placements. “While we support Include Youth’s work all year round, we’re very proud to join with them and all the other individuals and organisations throughout the UK and Ireland to mark #CareDay 2017.”

DANSKE BANK MEDALLION SHIELD DEALS UP NOVEL SEMI-FINAL PAIRINGS The final four of the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Medallion Shield has a novel look this year, as it features three schools who have never won the competition, namely The Royal School Armagh, Portadown College and Friends' School Lisburn.
Indeed, the one remaining semi-finalist with previous experience of winning the competition, Bangor Grammar School, have to look back to 1985 since their last success. The Medallion Shield, a competition for Year 11 schoolboy pupils, was first played for in 1910 when Methodist College Belfast were crowned the inaugural winners following a 11-0 win over Royal Belfast Academical Institution. For the first five years of the competition, only the two Belfast teams competed in the competition. Royal School Dungannon became the next school to join in 1915, before Bangor Grammar School in 1916 then Ballymena Academy and Coleraine Academical Institution in 1917. A century later, there are 36 schools competing in the 2016/17 Medallion Shield, with Methodist College Belfast and Royal Belfast Academical Institution currently topping the roll of honour on 35 titles each. Paths to the semi-finals: Portadown College have travelled the longest route to the semi-finals, having opened their campaign in Round 2 with a comfortable 58-10 win at home over County Armagh neighbours Lurgan College. They then won three successive away games with victories over Ballyclare High School (10-34), Royal School Dungannon (7-20) and Omagh Academy (15-17) to book their place in the last four. Bangor Grammar School entered the competition in Round 3 where they travelled to Ballymena Academy and edged out a 22-29 win. In the next round the Bangor pupils recorded a more comfortable 8-36 win away to Limavady
Grammar School. The quarter-finals dealt up a difficult tie against Royal Belfast Academical Institution but Bangor made the most of home advantage to squeeze through 14-12. The Royal School, Armagh began the competition with a 5-20 win away to Cambridge House in Round 4. The Armagh boys were also on the road for their quarter-final encounter against Wallace and it proved to be a tighter affair, with the visitors going through on a score line of 5-7. Friends’ School Lisburn also joined the competition in Round 4 and recorded an impressive 3-19 win over Belfast Royal Academy. In the quarter-finals Friends’ School hosted Methodist College Belfast and the home team held out for a 12-8 win to book their semi-final spot. THE ROYAL SCHOOL, ARMAGH V BANGOR GRAMMAR SCHOOL AT QUEEN’S UNIVERSITY ARENA PORTADOWN COLLEGE V FRIENDS' SCHOOL, LISBURN AT BANBRIDGE RUGBY CLUB Both semi-finals will be played on Saturday 25th February, kick-off 10.30am. The Danske Bank Ulster Schools' Medallion Shield Final will take place on Tuesday March 7th at Kingspan Stadium, kick-off 2.30pm. DANSKE BANK ULSTER SCHOOLS' MEDALLION SHIELD SEMI-FINAL DRAW:

ANDY WARWICK DISCUSSES...
ANDY WARWICK ... Edinburgh
work focuses on routine and mental preparation, how to think positively and if there is a mistake in the game, training our minds to overcome it quickly. It’s been really interesting and beneficial for us all. ... Glasgow The Glasgow game away at the end of September was one of the most enjoyable games that I have played in this season. We played really well and I think that if we can build on the Edinburgh game and take confidence from our performance at Scotstoun, we will get the win. We showed great momentum in the forwards last week, winning the lineout, winning the scrums, we had the forward battle sorted, so it’s just a case of giving the backs the ball on a plate and we will be flying on Saturday. ... Getting Players Back From Injury Having Stuart, Pete and Marcell back from long-term injury last week was an added bonus. Marcell was excellent, he carried the ball all day long. You can clearly see his ability to run over the top of boys is unbelievable. It gives you that extra passion to follow his lead, bulldoze guys and get the backs the ball. Let’s hope we can keep that momentum up for 80 minutes this weekend.
I was pleased with my own performance against Edinburgh. The set piece went well, we dominated the scrum well, on lineouts and mauls, we could have been slightly more effective but overall I was ecstatic to get the win and happy to be out there and starting again. It’s been a while since we got a win under our belts, we played really well during the first half and it’s just a pity we didn’t back that up in the second. I think going into this week it’s so important that we build on the first half and keep the momentum going from there. We let a few mistakes in the second half get to us, that led to a number of errors which interrupted the flow of play. ... Building Mental Toughness We have been working with a Sport Psychologist recently, who is training the squad to develop and build on our mental toughness during a game. It has really helped us, especially the guys in the front row. He is adding another layer to the attributes that we as athletes need at this level of the game. The S&C guys work so hard to get us in peak physical condition, but you also need your mental game to be strong. The Psychologist is pushing us to be the best we can be. A lot of

I liked Pathways because it wasn’t anything like school. After Pathways I did a course in joinery but I hated it. I thought it would be more practical but it was just lots of written work so I left. I started a few different courses and programmes, but kept leaving them because I didn’t like them. I have a few convictions and have been in trouble with the police a few times, so getting work is much harder because it’s hard to get a job when you have a criminal record. I’ve lived in two children’s homes and 15 different foster placements since I was 14, so I’ve always had a social worker, well different social workers, in my life. My social worker referred me to Give & Take:Core. On Give & Take you can come in and have a laugh with staff and other young people. My attendance is really good; I’m one of the best attenders in here. It’s easier to learn because there is someone there to actually help you. got ICT qualifications, learned how to cook, learned how to apply for jobs, write my CV, tried different sports and I want to do my work placement doing woodwork in the Men’s Shed at Conway Mill. When I move on from Give & Take I want to get into DJing or construction, or else go to college and study art. Give & Take gives me a routine, it helps build my confidence and if I wasn’t on it I would probably just be running about the town. I used to play rugby at school; I was in the school team. I can’t remember what position I played but I was pretty fast. We did a taster with Malone Rugby Club recently, we played tag rugby, got to practice kicks at goal and did general fitness stuff. My favourite team is the All Blacks. I used to play ice hockey for the Junior Belfast Giants, but haven’t played in years because of an injury. I’m still good at ice-skating and we get to go with Give & Take sometimes.

"My attendance at school was really bad and I quit tech three years in a row. Now my attendance at Include Youth is almost 100%. I feel really motivated and have made lots of friends on the Scheme." #CAREDAY
I quit college and my social worker told me about Include Youth. I travelled down to Ballymena and met with the youth worker who told me a bit more about the programme.
I am currently doing my Essential skills in English, Maths and ICT and getting help with building my CV. I am also doing my Duke of Edinburgh Bronze physical and skills Award. I really enjoy the Activate Programme, which is fitness and personal development, on a Thursday because we do a range of activities from spin class to the gym or learning how to cook healthy meals and make smoothies. Sport is really important to me as I enjoy it and feel good afterwards. I am part of a hip hop dance group and we train twice a week. I really enjoy dancing and am going to be taking part in my first dance competition in April. I also do boxing on a Tuesday and running on a Thursday.
I started off as a beginner with the running club, doing 5k runs for the first few weeks, but now I run with the intermediate group doing 10k runs. It is definitely much harder, but I can do it. I’ve been to three Ulster matches with Include Youth, although I don’t know whether to count my first one as it was postponed due to the pitch conditions. I got a lift from Carrickfergus to the match, because Include Youth staff and young people were due to volunteer, and I just remembered thinking it is really really cold. I was also at the Guinness PRO12 match on Friday and saw Ulster beat Edinburgh, which was great. There is only one bad thing about rugby, and that’s the weather!

Scottish raiders keep on coming to Kingspan Stadium, and Ulster’s mission today is to record a priceless ‘double’ over Glasgow Warriors. A STATEMENT OF INTENT
A win at Scotstoun in the autumn was a real highlight of the season, an evening when the hosts were put to the sword with one of the most complete performances for a long time. After returning to Guinness PRO12 action against Edinburgh last weekend, and getting some much- valued confidence back in an important bonus- point victory, the players know that it must set the pattern for the next five weeks, a period when Ulster’s campaign will be defined. The quest for a Top Four semi-final spot in May is the only priority in town, and it continues in Belfast against a Warriors squad which has been transformed in recent years. The loss last weekend to the resurgent Scarlets was a blow, and the Scots arrive in Belfast with similar incentive to that of Ulster: a win to keep their own semi-final ambitions well-and-truly alive. Particularly under the guidance of Gregor Townsend, Glasgow has developed into one of the most formidable sides in the competition, and that it provides the body of the rejuvenated Scottish national side only evidences its quality. Townsend was one of his country’s most gifted attacking players, capable of true genius, and in moving into coaching he’s done his apprenticeship with his country and with the Warriors, and created teams of imagination but also of pragmatism. He delegates well, so in the darker reaches of the pack he has assistants who offer him a forward platform from which wonderful players like Stuart Hogg, Tommy Seymour – previously of this parish – and Finn Russell to thrive. The Warriors’ pre-eminence in Scotland is such that no fewer than 13 of its squad was in the national match day panel for the opening Six Nations defeat of Ireland, and no doubt Townsend will hope that he gets a few players released to pull on the Glasgow jersey this afternoon. In Scotland's narrow defeat in Paris last Sunday many of his charges were prominent, Jonny Gray, Frazer Brown, Alex Dunbar and two imminent departures from Scotstoun – powerhouse No. 8 Josh Strauss and Edinburgh-bound centre Mark Bennett - bringing a winning mentality to the national side. In most cases those players will be kept out of PRO12 action this weekend.
For Ulster, this is possibly the best time to meet Glasgow when the visitors are more affected by international calls, though like any thoroughly professional club the visitors are constantly strengthening their resources, and – crucially – securing the long-term services of key performers. Ali Price came off the bench when skipper Greg Laidlaw hobbled off, and the scrum-half may well get an outing at Kingspan where his lively, alert style will keep the home back-row on its toes. Ruan Pienaar should be fit to resume today, and that axis at the back and base of the scrum with Marcell Coetzee will be important not just this afternoon but in the ‘must win’ run-in to May’s PRO12 play-offs, a target Pienaar has dedicated himself to help achieve as he reluctantly takes his come into the reckoning to reclaim his Ireland spot against France next week and will not be available, but his partner-in-crime for so long, Tommy Bowe, will make an appearance, and Luke Marshall was also released by Ireland in the hope they’ll get some game time. And while we know we are blessed with the quality of Ulster’s wing three-quarters, Jacob Stockdale’s barnstorming displays giving the coaches a genuine option in that position, wasn’t it marvellous to see Craig Gilroy take his chance off the Irish replacements’ bench in Rome and jink his way to a spectacular hat-trick in the thumping of the Italians? If Les Kiss has a selection dilemma on the wings it’s just as keen for Joe Schmidt with three Ulstermen of proven quality in his panel. As for Paddy Jackson, Ulster supporters will have been unsurprised but thrilled by the out-half’s flawless display against Italy, his perfect return from nine kicks matched by some ingenious handling and decisive passing. That iconic green No. 10 jersey is surely destined to be his in the immediate and long-term future. The Kingspan Stadium crowd was back to its fervent best on Friday of last week, particularly in the free-flowing, try-laden first half against Edinburgh. The first appearance in the white of Ulster of Marcell Coetzee proved leave of Ulster at the end of the season. Andrew Trimble is fit again and will surely

a total vindication of the recruitment of a truly outstanding back-rower. Powerful with ball in hand, robust and strong in the tackle and ruck, the South African lived up to all the expectations, and with more games, fans can anticipate even more to relish in a genuine ball-carrying forward who was clearly delighted to make his debut – and an impression! There was much to admire about the side last week, and to be genuinely encouraged by in the pursuit of PRO12 success. But Director of Rugby Les Kiss and Head Coach Neil Doak will also have noted the more muted display of the second period, when some basic defensive errors reappeared and allowed Edinburgh a ‘shot’ at redemption. However, it would be wrong to be churlish as, on the whole, this was an Ulster side playing with confidence and no little invention, the wondrous Charles Piutau, the cleverness of Paul Marshall and the returning Peter Nelson at half- back, and the midfield authority of Darren Cave catching the eye. The scrum was always going to be tested but, for example, John Andrew, Ricky Lutton, Kieran Treadwell and skipper Chris Henry and Robbie Diack never took a backward step. The line-outs were mainly reliable and productive, and for this afternoon’s clash the base elements of the side were well-oiled and back to their functioning best. Against Glasgow the hosts today must put together a full 80 minutes of last week’s first-half energy and invention and not allow concentration and execution to wane as it certainly did in an unnecessarily awkward, rather than disastrous, second 40 minutes. Kiss knows this and the task he and his coaches have is to see the remaining ‘regular season’ games as a block, a ‘mini-season’, where nothing but 100 per cent application is needed. Off the pitch, the news broken elsewhere that Jono Gibbes would take over as Head Coach next season will not have distracted either staff or players. They are all far too professional and mature to dwell on distant matters, and Kiss, Doak, Allen Clarke and Niall Malone will be focussed only on their jobs of the moment:
All of the coaching team has seen Glasgow grow into a serious threat in the PRO12 Champinship and in Europe, and will be aware that Townsend will want to sign off his tenure at Glasgow with another big season. For him Scotland awaits, but like those who are moving on in the Summer from Kingspan Stadium, his focus will be on the role he has now and on the club he has fashioned into an entertaining but also pragmatic force. That all seats for this game were sold well in advance is just more evidence of how important this match is to both sides, and it also confirms that the Ulster fans are knowledgeable enough to know that, from a season of a few highs and some inexplicable troughs, they have a squad of high-quality players with the skills to negotiate its way to a wonderfully exciting and fulfilling climax to the campaign. Be certain that this afternoon will be tense, in the stands and on the terraces, but there is so much enterprise on the pitch, so much at stake, that the Warriors and Ulster will be bound to provide an incident-packed rugby occasion. With a win Ulster can leapfrog Glasgow in the table and really join the scramble for a coveted Top Four finish. That would be a statement of intent.
