USD Men's Basketball 2008-2009

VllllVEWHERE YOU SPRING BREAK

If last year's Torero basketball season had been a book written by first year head coach Bill Grier, it most likely would have appeared on the best seller's list. For the upcoming 2008-09 campaign, Grier will have a lot of the same characters (everyTorero returns) and storyline to work with (8 non-conference rematches; wee league competition; and wee Tournament) as he pens his second work. With all five starters and ten lettermen back from last year's 22-14 team that won the WCC Tournament and advanced to the second round of the NCAA's, sec– ond-year head coach Bill Grier is cautiously optimistic for the upcoming season. The Toreros finished last year strong, going 11-3 in league (3rd place) and 14- 3 down the stretch. They knocked off San Francisco, Saint Mary's and No. 20 Gonzaga in the WCC Tourna– ment, and then followed up by upsetting 15th-ranked UConn in the opening round of the NCAA Tourna– ment. In the second round of the NCAA's, USO over– came a 15-point deficit against Western Kentucky to take a 55-54 lead with about 6 minutes to go, but eventually came up short against a very good Hilltop– pers' club, 72-63. SENIORS JOHNSON AND POMARE TO LEAD WAY For the 2008-09 campaign, the Toreros are picked to finish 3rd this season in the Preseason WCC Head Coaches Poll. San Diego will look to the senior tan– dem of guard Brandon Johnson (16.9 ppg, 3.5 apg, 77 steals) and forward Gyno Pomare (14.1 ppg, 7.4 rpg) to supply most of the leadership and offensive power. Both players were First Team AII-WCC picks a year ago, with Johnson earning MVP honors at the West Coast Conference Tournament. Last year Johnson set a new USO single season scoring record with 590 points, and enters his last year with 1,277 points (9th all-time) and 398 assists (3rd all-time). Pomare wasn't far behind with his 508 points and he enters his final year 7th all-time in scor– ing (1,296 points) and 3rd in rebounding (680) among USO Division I players. Both players have a chance to leave USO as the program's all-time leading scorer - that spot is currently held by Stan Washington (1,472 points; 1971-74).

TRIO OF RETURNING STARTERS Junior wing De'Jon Jackson (7.6 ppg), the lone Torero to start all 36 games a year ago, returns to the lineup as the team's most consistent player on a game-by-game basis. It was Jackson who knocked down the game-winning shot against the Connecti– cut Huskies in overtime with his step-back 18-footer with 1.2 seconds left that gave USO its first ever NCAA Tournament victory. Rounding out the returning starters is the sopho– more tandem of forward Rob Jones (9.0 ppg, 5.8 rpg) and guard Trumaine Johnson (5.7 ppg, 2.7 apg). Jones was named to the WCC All-Freshman team and pro– duced some big moments including his 27 point-13 rebound efforts against LMU, and his 16 point-15 re– bound game against Pepperdine. Johnson started the last 15 games for USO with the Toreros going 12-3 during that stretch. Both players will be expected to increase their production in their second seasons.

STRONG CAST OF RETURNERS & NEWCOMERS Returning lettermen that will add to USD's depth include senior guard Danny Brown, a true threat from beyond the three-point arc; junior wing Chris Lewis (4.7 ppg; 3.3 rpg); sophomore guard Devin Ginty who spearheaded USD's upset of Kentucky with 18 points (4-4 in threes); and sophomore forward Clinton Hous– ton and center Nathan Lozeau who both bolster USD's inside presence with their rebounding and defense. A trio of new recruits is headed by 6-9 junior for– ward Roberto Mafra, an All-Conference performer at Southeastern (Iowa) Community College. Mafra is ex– pected to make an immediate impact at both ends of the floor. Sophomore Matt Dorr played a key role at Spokane City College with the team going 30-2 and plac ing 2nd overall in NWAACC championships. 1 Guard Devon Braswell (Detroit, Ml) will sit out the 2008-09 campaign after suffering a season-ending 1 injury during fall workouts. Walk-ons Nick Price and 1 Ryan Harbour will both compete for playing time off the bench. 1 will have rematches against the likes of UNLV, Nevada, Cal State Bakersfield, San Diego State, San Jose State, New Mexico, Boise State and Marshall. USD will also ' participate in the Paradise Jam in the U.S. Virgin ls– lands in mid-November where they will open against Valparaiso; play either Wisconsin or Iona in the second round; and possibly have a rematch with the UConn Huskies. In mid-December the Toreros will travel to Portland to take on the Oregon Ducks in the Pape' Jam, and close out the month with a tough game at Mississippi State. The West Coast Conference, which qualified three teams for the 2008 NCAA Tournament (USD, Gonzaga, Saint Mary's), will return to aThursday/Saturday men's basketball schedule after playing Saturday/Monday the past three seasons. The move to Thursday/Satur– day will mark the WCC's debut on ESPN's "Thursday TOUGH SCHEDULE ONCE AGAIN With the belief that a tough non-conference ' schedule gets you conference-ready, Coach Grier has , put together another competitive slate. BILL GRIER SecondSeason as Head Coach

Bill Grier, 45, enters his second year as head coach of the USO men's basketball program. In just his first season at the helm of the Torero pro– gram, Grier led Torero basketball to heights never reached before. USO became the first San Diego Division I team to win an NCAA Tournament contest when it handed No.4 seed Connecticut a 70-69 overtime loss on March 21st. Following a hard-fought 2nd round loss to Western

Kentucky, USO closed out its season with an overall record of 22-14, includ– ing a 15-4 mark following the start of league. Following its 11-3 West Coast

Conference finish, good for 3rd place, the Toreros won the WCC Tour– nament with wins over Pepperdine, Saint Mary's and No. 20 Gonzaga. In addition to its outstanding road win over the Kentucky Wildcats at historic Rupp Arena in late December, the Toreros combined to knock off three top-20 teams (Saint Mary's, Gonzaga and UConn).Grier has the luxury of returning his entire squad for the 2008-09 campaign, in addition to welcoming his second recruiting class. Hired on March 26, 2007, Grier became USD's 11th head coach in program history and just the 4th coach since USO moved to the NCAA Division I ranks in 1979-80. Prior to his arrival at USO, Grier was at Gonzaga University for sixteen years, the last eight as top assistant to head coach Mark Few. He immediately went to work on putting his personal stamp on Torero basketball. After assembling an outstanding staff, and getting acquainted with USD's returning players, he went to work on recruiting and putting together arguably USD's toughest schedule ever. "We were searching for a person with an over– whelming drive to succeed," said Ky Snyder, USD Executive Director of Athletics."We found that and much more in Bill Grier. The people I talked with across the country, people who I greatly respect, had nothing but praise for Bill - a great person and family man, a teacher who is great at individual workouts, a tireless worker, demanding on the court but also with success in the classroom, a great recruiter, thorough in his approach, ready to become a head coach. It is with great pleasure that I am able to introduce the man that fits all of these descriptions as our new head men's

basketball coach."

A highly motivated, detailed and results oriented basketball coach with excellent commu– nication and teaching skills, Grier played an integral role in Gonzaga's arrival on the national scene. He began his career at Gonzaga in 1992 under head coach Dan Fitzgerald where he served as the restricted-earnings assistant for six years. He was elevated to a full-time assis– tant for the 1997-98 season when Dan Monson took over the head coaching reigns. During his two seasons under Monson, the Bulldogs went 52-17, won back-to-back WCC titles, went to the 1998 NIT Sweet Sixteen and made it to the 1999 NCAA Elite Eight. In July, 1999, when Monson accepted the Minnesota job, Mark Few was made the head coach and Grier stayed where he was promoted to top assistant. Over the past eight years Gonzaga saw nothing but continued success with the teams compiling a 211-52 record over that span. During this time the Zags won the WCC regular-season title seven times;the WCCTournament title seven times; advanced to the NCAA Tournament eight times, including three trips to the Sweet Sixteen; and finished ranked in the top-10 of the final AP poll three times (2004-2006). Overall with Grier as an assistant coach, the Bulldogs have combined for an overall record of 381-126; won 11 regular-season WCC championships; won nine WCC Tournament titles (33-7 1 wee tournament record); advanced to nine consecutive NCAA Tournaments, and ten overall, including four Sweet 16 appearances and the 1999 Elite Eight. 1 The last ten years Grier was the "defensive coordinator" for the Bulldogs, as well as being re– sponsible for ten recruiting classes. He has developed the program into one known for its defense as much as it is for its offense. Since assuming the defensive role under former head coach Dan Monson, Gonzaga has led the WCC in field goal percentage defense six times, in– cluding the 3rd best mark in the nation in 2004. Responsible for the past ten recruiting classes, his 2007 class is the program 1 s best yet, ranked 11th-best in the nation by the Rivals.com re– cruiting service. Four recruits in the 2007 class rank in the top-100 in their class. He also successfully developed both post players (1997-2003) and perimeter players (2003- 2007). Post players Bakari Hendrix (1998) and Casey Calvary (2001) were both WCC Players of the Year. Perimeter players he worked with included Derek Raivio (2007), the WCC Player of the Year; Adam Morrison (2006), a 1st team All-American and WCC Player of the Year; and Blake Stepp (2004), a 2nd team All-American and two-time WCC Player of the Year.

Grier started his coaching career at his alma mater, Cottage Grove High School in 1986. After serving two years as a freshman coach, Grier was elevated r-----c=:i to junior varsity coach and varsity assistant. Grier left Cottage Grove to be the head coach at Creswell High School during the 1990-91 season. He played two years in junior college (Central Oregon and South– western Oregon), then transferred to Oregon where he received a B.S. degree in Leisure Studies and Ser– vices in 1990. Bill and his wife, Nicole (Styles) were married in Au– gust of 1996. The couple became parents with the arrival of Giselle Marie on March 4, 2006, just two days prior to Gonzaga's home semifinal game in the WCC Tournament.

Bill Carr begins his second year as Associate Head Coach on Bill Grier's staff. As Grier's Associate Head Coach, Carr plays an important role with all aspects of the Torero basketba ll program, including recruiting, scheduling, scouting, practice preparation, coaching USD's forwards and centers, and with in-game decision mak– ing. Last year he played a key role in USD's success as the Toreros finished 22-14 overall (11 -3 in wee, 3rd place), won the WCC Tournament title, and advanced to the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournament. The Toreros stunned No. 15 UCONN in the first round giving USO its first ever NCAA Tournament victory. San Diego also garnered top-20 victories over Gonzaga and Saint Mary's, along with an impressive road win over the Kentucky Wildcats at historic Rupp Arena. where he was a player and assistant coach at the University of San Francisco. Carr played two years (1985-87) at USF for former San Diego head coach Jim Brovelli. Carr earned a degree in Accounting and went on to spend nine years as an assistant at USF for Brovelli (5 years) and Phil Mathews (4 years). He helped land 10 first team AII-WCC per– formers, including the 1998 and 2000 WCC Freshmen of the Year. USF advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 1998 after winning the West Coast Conference Tourna- ment championship. Before getting the head position at UC San Diego,

Carr served two seasons as the associate head coach at Long Beach State, and three as the head coach at Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama.
