What do I need to do in order to play at San Diego as a freshman? If yo u intend to participate in Di vision I or Il athleti cs as a freshman, you must register and be certified by the NCAA lnitial-E]jgibi]jty Clearinghouse. Your high school counselors should provide you with a student-release form and a brochure titled, "NCAA Guide for the College-Bound Student-Athlete." In order to be regi stered with the clearinghouse, you mu st complete the student-release form and mail the top (white) copy of the fo rm to th e clearinghouse along with the $50 registration fee. Give the yellow and pink copies of the form to a high-school official, who then send s the yellow copy, along with an official copy of your high-school transcript that includes your SAT or ACT score(s) , to the clearinghouse. Your high school should keep the pink copy for its fil es. You may also register on]jne at www.ncaa– cl earinghouse. net. After graduation and before the school closes for the summer, yo ur school also mu st send the clearinghouse a copy of your final transcript that confirms graduation from high school. Your co unselors can obtain regi stration materials, at no cost, by calling the cleari nghouse at (319) 337-1492 or (877) 262-1492. How do I know if I'm being recruited? You becorne a "prospective student-athlete" when yo u start ninth -grade classes. Before the ninth grade, you become a prospec– tive student-athlete if a college gives you (or your relatives or friends) any financial aid or other benefits that the college does not provide prospective students generally. You become a " recruited prospective student-athlete" at a particular college if any coach approaches you (or any member of your famil y) about enrolling and participating in athletics at that college. Activi ties by coaches that cause you to become a recruited prospective student-athlete are (1) providing you with an official visit; (2) placing more than one telephone call to you or any other member of your family; or (3) visiting you or any other member o f your famil y anywhere other than the college campus. Boosters: In addition to general recruiting regu lations, no alumni, boosters or representatives o f a college's athletics interests can be involved in your recruitment. There can be no phone calls or letters from boosters. If a USD booster is contacting you, please call the San Diego Comp]jance Office as soon as possible at (619) 260-7577. Don't risk your NCAA eligibility!
followi ng circumsta nces: (1) du ring the fi ve days immediately befo re yo ur official visit by the college you will be visiting; (2) on the day of a coach's o ff-campus contact with you by that coach; (3) on the initial date for signing the National Letter of Intent in yo ur sport through two days after the initi al signing date; and (4) you (or your parents) may telephone a coach at your expense as often as you wish. After a National Letter o f Intent is signed, un]jmited calls may be placed to th e prospect. Off-Campus Contacts: A college coach may contact yo u in person off the college campus on ly o n or after July 1 after the completion of yo ur junior year in hig h school. The contact mu st take place on the prospect's hig h school campus and fol – low res trictions on the spo rt's recruiting calendar. A contact is any face- to-face m eeting b etween a college coach or athletics staff member and yo u or your parents, during which any of you say more th an " h e!Jo." Also, an y such face-to-face meeting that is prearranged or that takes place on your campus, at an organized compe tition or practice involving yo u or yo ur high school, preparatory school, two-year college or all-s tar team shall be considered a contact, regardless of the conversation. However, a co!Jege coach may v isit yo ur high school (with the approval of your hig h school principal) o nl y once a week dur– ing contact p eriod . Evaluations: An evaluation is any off-campus activity used to assess your academic qualifications or athletics abili ty, inclucLng a visit to your high school (during which no contact occurs) or watching yo u practice or compete at any site. In football, a coach has three evaluation opportuniti es and six contact op– portunities. Once yo u sign a National Letter of Intent, you may be evaluated an unlimited number of time s by a college coach from the college with which you have signed. Letters: Letters and printed recruiting information may be sent to you starting September 1 st at the beginning of yo ur junior year in hig h school. However, you may still contact a univer– sity prio r to this date to receive general (non-athletic related) information. You m ay also complete an athletic questionnaire prior to this date. What Can I Receive from San Diego? You (or your fam il y) may not receive any benefit, inducement or arrangement, such as cash, clothing, camp, improper expenses, trans– portati on, gifts or loans to encourage you to sign a National Letter of Intent or attend an NCAA college.
When can I talk to the coach and have him/her see me play?
Telephone Calls: In Football, a prospect may receive one phone call in May of the prospects junior year in high school and may start receiving additional calls after September 1 of your senior year. A f– ter this, a college coach is Limited to one telephone call per week to you (or your parents or legal guardians), except that unlimited calls to you (or your parents or legal guardians) may be mad e under the
