USD WOMEN'S TENNIS PLAYER PROFILES

1991-1992 WOMEN'S TENNIS OUTLOOK The University of San Diego women 's tennis team enters the 1992 season as one of the most highly respected teams in collegiate women's tennis . With three consecutive NCAA appearances as its springboard , Head Coach Sherri Stephens and her Toreras are looking toward the 1992 season with anticipation. Seven players return to the Toreras ' 1992 nine player roster. Headed by senior Sakolwan "Tuck " Kacharoen and sophomores Laura Rich ard s and Julie McKean , the Toreras will field a lineup equally strong in both singles and doubles. Newcomers Maddy Diekmann, a senior transfer from Brigham Young University, and freshman Tracy Ishii give the Toreras a group of nine players that Stephens feels "can play very competitively in any Top 20 match". The Toreras beg in the 1992 season with a #18 national ranking . They will lace a schedule that is among the toughest in the country. Included among the Toreras' opponents are home contests with Pepperdine , Stanford, Clemson ,Wisconsin and Brigham Young and road contests at USC, San Diego State and the University of California. Th e Toreras will also host their own USO Invitational , an eight team event, in March .

Paula is filled with talent and desire. ShecombinedwithTuck to post a perfect 8-0 record in doubles and was 8-3 in singles as a sophomore. She is expected to have an immediate impact in both singles and doubles this season.

SAKOLWAN "TUCK" KACHAROEN Bangkok, Thailand Senior 5'2" Major. Business Administration

USD's only four year senior, Tuck ended the '90-'9 1season with a 21-15 record and a #35 national ranking in collegiate women's singles. She was singles runner-up at the 1990 West Coast Conference Championships and was a finalistat the 1992 Milwaukee Classic in doubles. She will see action in both singles and doubles.

KARA BRADY Lawrence, KS Sophomore

5'3" Major: Diversified Liberal Arts

This season'steam captain,Kara isdescribed by hercoaches as "the Jimmy Connors of women's tennis" forhernever-say– die attitude. She won the Sportsmanship Award at the 199 1 Fiesta Bowl Tournament and will see action in both singles and doubles this season.

MADDY DIEKMANN Las Vegas, NV Senior 5'3" Major: Political Science

HEAD COACH SHERRI STEPHENS Now in her eighth season as head coach of the women's tennis program at the University of San Diego, Sherri Stephens has quickly turned the USO program into one of the best, most respected women's tennis programs throughout the West. A native ofPhoenix, Arizona, Stephens was a nationally ranked player on the junior circuit before enrolling at the University of Arizona. After completing her collegiate playing career in 1979, Stephens was named an assistant coach of the Wildcats. Stephens arrived at the University of San Diego in the Fall of 1984 and immediately began to re-shape the USO women's tennis fortunes. Proof of her success lies in the Toreras' three straight second place finishes at the West Coast Conference Champion ships as well as appearances in the last three NCAA Championships. Her '91-'92 team begins the season with a #18 national ranking. Sherri Stephens is well respected among her peers in the coaching profession. She was a featured speaker at the 1992 ITCA Coaches' Convention. Her topic of "Unique Practice Ideas" dealt with practic e planning techniques. ASSISTANT COACH ANNE-MARIE VOORHEIS Anne-Marie Voorheis returns for her second season with the Toreras. A native of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Voorheis held top Florida rankings throughout her years in the junior program. She played collegiately at North Carolina State University, earning Most Valuable Player honors and serving as team captain her senior year. She graduated from NCSU in 1989 with a degree in Business Management and Economics. Prior to coming to USO,Voorheis was an assistant coach with the men's and women's programs at George Mason University. She is currently pursuing her Master's degree in Business Administration.

A transfer from Brigham Young University, Maddy is a consistently strong singles player who compiled a 24-10 record in '90-'9 1. She will add experience and depth to the team's singles lineup. Strong academically, she recorded a 3.70 GPA entering the Spring 1992 semester.

LAURA RICHARDS Vista, CA Sophomore 5 '6" Major: Undeclared

The 1991 singles champion at the ITCA-Rolex Southern California, Laura begins 1992 with a #20 national ranking in singles. She was a participant in the 1992 Rolex National Indoors Championships. Laura is expected to challenge for a top spot in both doubles ans singles this year.

LAURA MANNISTO Kauniainen, Finland Junior 5'7" Major: Business Administration

Strong in doubles, Laura brings an international flair to the USO program. She compiled a 9-5 doubles mark in '90-'91 and is a two-time West Coast Conference "Scholar-Athlete" selection.

JULIE McKEON Northbrook, IL Sophomore 5 '6" Major: Undeclared

Julie is a strong contender for a top spot in both singles and doubles. She was a doubles finalist (with Tuck) at the 1992 Milwaukee Classic and was selected to the 1991 NCAA Championships in doubles (with Tonya Fuller).

KAREN LAUER Berkeley, CA Junior 5'1" Major: English

TRACYISHII Torrance, CA Freshman 5'2" Major: Undeclared

Karen adds strength to the team with her experience, toughness and leadership abilities. Considered by her coachesas "a hard working individual",Karen will add depth to both the singles and doubles lineups. She compiled a 7- 2 singles record in '90-91.

1992 USD TORERAS

The lone freshman on this year's squad, Tracy is a player her coaches feel is "a star of the future". Making her return into the national tennis scene after some time away from the game, Tracy was a top nationally ranked junior player who will see action in both singles and doubles this season.
