Membership Updates Horseshoe Bend CC ownership keeps an eye on all membership levels and activity to ensure our members will receive value from their membership. With an influx of new members over the winter and early spring it was apparent that the Swim Membership level would need to be capped. Per ownership, the swim membership level was capped a few weeks ago.   In addition, the Tennis membership category, which would allow access to not only the swim and social amenities but also our award winning tennis facilities, has decreased its initiation fee from $5,000 to $3,500 as of March 18th. Upgrade Promotion: Golf season has arrived! Have you been back and forth about deciding to add Golf to your membership? Now is the time! Tennis members interested in upgrading to Golf  may do so for an upgrade difference of $5,000. So start dusting off your clubs because this promotion begins now through April 30th.  Questions: Contact Membership Manager, Aprial Castleberry at acastleberry@horseshoebendcc.com.

COOKING WITH THE RIGHT OIL

BY EXECUTIVE CHEF ARRON

Always consider the smoke point of your cooking oil: Be sure to use a fat that correlates to the level of heat you will be cooking at. Low-heat oil, such as butter and some nut oils, will burn at a medium or high temperature, so be sure to use those only when cooking on low heat. With high-heat oils, such as almond, avocado, canola, or grapeseed, you can cook at low or high temperatures without having to worry about them burning.

To minimize the effects of the heat try to following the following tips:

TIPOF THE MONTH

1. Hydrate often. Drink fluid throughout the evening before and day you play. Many players make the mistake of only hydrating during their match or waiting until they feel thirsty, at this stage it is often too late. It is also very important to be drinking the correct fluids. Drink a combination of water and electrolyte sports drinks and try to avoid diuretics such as coffee and alcohol. 2. Physically prepare. To be able to compete and play well in the heat, we need to practice and prepare. The more physically fit you are the better you will be, come match day. Don’t just turn up on match day and expect to handle the heat. 3. Apply Sunscreen. Use SPF 30+ water resistant sunscreen, apply in the morning and then reapply regularly during the day. 4. Wear a hat. A hat will protect your head and face from the sun and make you feel noticeably cooler. 5. Wear sun protective clothing. Ensure your tennis clothing offers sun protection. Long sleeve tops protect the arms and collared shirts are great to protect the neck. 6. Use an ice towel. It is pretty easy to bring a cooler and include a couple of towels in there with your drinks and ice. Wrapping an ice towel around your neck on the change of ends can help you feel much cooler. 7. Stay out of the sun. Obviously when we play this might not be possible, however during the day try to find the shade and if possible don’t sit in the sun to watch your teammates play. Also, if there is shade available on the court, try to use it during points or on the change of ends.

By Luke Burden, Director of Athletics

With the summer days warming up quickly we are all going to feel the effects of the warmer weather and sun. Heat illness is a serious issue and one that we all want to try and avoid.

There are three stages to Heat Illness:

1. Heat Cramps Many players have experienced the first stage of heat illness. Players will be often experience cramps in the extremities. If a player is experiencing heat cramps, they should stop activity, find a cool place in the shade and drink fluids. Stretching the area can often help as well. 2. Heat Exhaustion In the second stage of heat illness the player will often have cool, moist, pale skin, a headache, dizziness or weakness and nausea. Like the first stage try to find a cool place to get out of the sun and heat. Loosen or remove clothing and drink fluids. If the player refuses fluid or is vomiting call 911. 3. Heat Stroke This is the third, most severe stage of heat illness and is an emergency 911 situation. Symptoms of heat stroke often include: Vomiting, high body temperature, weak pulse and shallow breathing. The skin may still be moist or the player may have already stopped sweating by this stage. The player will also exhibit decreased alertness or even complete loss of consciousness. Heat stroke, cramps and sunburn are never fun, however there a few things we can do to minimize the effects and maximize our time on court.

Try to use these tips during the warmer months to help you stay healthy and play your best tennis.

The information presented is for the purpose of educating people about heat illness. It is not intended to be used for medical diagnosis or treatment. Should you have any related questions, please consult a healthcare provider.

HBCC Swim Team is Back!

The Horseshoe Bend CC Mustangs are a summer league swim program associated with the Atlanta Swimming Association. Mustang summer swimming is a great way to learn about the sport and become involved in the Horseshoe Bend CC community.

Who can swim for the HBCC Mustangs? • Swimmers must be between the ages of 4 and 18 as of June 1, 2019. • The HBCC Swim Team is open to all HBCC families with swim privileges and in good standing. • The HBCC Mustang Swim Team is a club team in a recreational league. Swim Practices are held in order to help swimmers improve their strokes and learn new strokes. Swim team practice is not a time to teach basic swim lessons. The ratio of coaches to swimmers is too great to provide a one-on- one lesson experience. While we want to encourage younger children to swim and help them perfect their strokes, parents should consider doing some pre-season lessons to help get children ready for the season in order to have a safe and fun summer.

Want to become a Mustang? HBCC Swim Team 2019 Fees: • $130 for first swimmer • $105 for sibling • $20 for swimmers 15 and over

HBCC will offer online registration this year! To register, go to www.swimhbcc.com and sign in. Returning members may use their username and password from the 2018 season and will then be asked to update their information. New members or first time swimmers may create a new login. Once logged in, members may update their account information and register for the upcoming season. Registration fees will be charged to your HBCC member account. HBCC registration fees include: team t-shirt, team swim cap, expert coaching during swim practices and meets, awards, and the end-of-season party. HBCC swim team fees will not include registration to the Summer Championships at Georgia Tech as registration for this event will take place later in the season; the cost will be $23 per swimmer.
