Unsurprisingly, this issue of EuroWire is littered with news from companies enjoying success from the recent wire 2014 in Düsseldorf, and of new technologies and machines launched during the week-long exhibition. Whilst success at the show can initially be judged by the number of both exhibitors and visitors, it is rewarding to see the interest turning into rm orders (see pages 16, 19, 23 and 26). Similarly refreshing is the fact that thiswasmirrored across the Atlantic with the recent staging of Wire Expo in Indianapolis (see page 14). It appears that con dence in the industry is returning worldwide. This can again be re ected in the quarterly report from Leoni. The German business recorded its highest ever sales in a quarter in the rst three months of this year (full story on page 20). Advancements in the production of bre optic cables have also been made by teams from Rosendahl and Nextrom (page 34), while Belden has introduced a new cable to the market, designed speci cally for the passenger railway market (the full story is on page 35). Research and development teams have been kept busy with Dätwyler introducing its ‘dual-mode’ cables for voice and data transmission (see page 33), and sta from Rosendahl and Nextrom working together to bring about what they describe as a ‘ground-breaking’ moment in the production of bre optic cables (page 34). Russian steelmaker OAO Severstal, the second largest in its country, is alsoweighing up its options in the USA and is currently considering a bid from US Steel Corp for plants in Dearborn, Michigan, and Columbus, Mississippi.
