my gratitude to all our wonderful staff, in every post and in every sector, whose daily efforts epitomize the meaning of excellence, to our volunteers who perform such blessed deeds, and to the charitable organizations whose assistance is vital in mobilizing contributions on our behalf. Looking ahead, we aim to build an additional hospital tower, upgrade units and equipment, foster links with leading pediatric centers in the world, and advance personal achievement. Our mission is to persevere so that we can continue to spearhead pediatric medicine in Israel and take it to new heights of accomplishment. I close with words of appreciation and esteem that define the start and the conclusion of Schneider Children's first twenty years. Firstly, to our dear Schneider Family: we salute you and acknowledge your huge contribution towards the establishment of the hospital. And secondly, to Ziv Koren, whose moving and unique panorama exemplifies Schneider Children's in all its myriad facets.

We have come a long way since that day in the Fall of 1991 when the first children’s hospital was launched in the State of Israel. Over the years, Schneider Children’s has completely transformed the practice of pediatric medicine and dramatically influenced medical tradition in the country. In the 80’s, when the hospital’s founders, Irving and Helen Schneider, presented their vision and idea of an independent hospital solely dedicated to children, it seemed like an impossible dream. Today it is clear that the acquaintance with pediatric sub-specialties evolved from the establishment of Schneider Children’s. The dream became a reality, without which it is impossible to imagine our lives. We can be enormously proud of the hospital's medical achievements, standard of services, and its unique approach to treating the sick child and his family. For good reason Schneider Children’s is a leading brand name for Clalit Health Services, a model for imitation, and a huge resource for medical students, residents and specialists in Israel and the world. “Schneider Children’s” is synonymous with pediatric medical excellence. The success of Schneider Children’s derives first and foremost from its quality personnel that rallied around the hospital. Their ability to give life and quality of life - engendering the hope and smile of every child - is exactly what makes our hospital so special. Many of our senior physicians have won awards over the years, two of whom were recipients of The Israel Prize for Medical Research. It is here that I would like to express

SEEING THE ENTIRE PICTURE

לראות את התמונה כולה

את הכמיהה לבריאות; היא מספרת סיפור. היא מטיילת בין מיטות הילדים החולים, מתעדת מציאות לא פשוטה לעיכול שיהיו שיבקשו להדחיק, ועם זאת מעניקה מבט רך, כמו מייחלת יחד איתנו לראות את הילדים הללו מטיילים בעצמם, בריאים ומאושרים. כל הורה לילד חולה הוא חלק מהסיפור הזה. כל אחות, כל רופא וכל איש צוות הוא שחקן בדרמה שנפרשת בפנינו דף אחר דף. אבל הגיבורים האמיתיים של הסיפור, גיבורים תרתי משמע, הם ענת, חיה, חאלד, רחל, קריסטינה, איתמר, מקס, אור, אביגיל - הילדים המטופלים בשניידר. "במקום שיש בריאות יש תקווה, ובמקום שיש תקווה יש הכול", אומר פתגם ידוע. אין בעולם דאגה כמו חרדה לחייו של ילד חולה, אבל רפואת ילדים - יאמר לכם כל רופא - היא הרפואה האופטימית ביותר שיש. כל הניואנסים האלו לא נעלמים מהעין הרגישה והמיומנת של זיו קורן. גם ברגעים הקשים, גם במצבים שבהם הכול תלוי על בלימה, התקווה הזאת, האמונה שאפשר, המלחמה על החיים - כל אלו ניבטים אלינו מפניהם של הילדים גיבורי שניידר ואלו שסביבם. הפסיפס שנוצר לנגד עינינו יוצר פאזל ויזואלי, שהתמונה השלמה שהוא מרכיב שווה יותר מסך חלקיו. כן, ממש כמו מרכז שניידר עצמו.

בקונטקסט של בית חולים, המילה "צילום" לוקחת אותנו למקומות ברורים מאוד: היישר אל חדר הרנטגן, אל יחידת ההדמיה, אל החדשניים, אל מבטו המרוכז של הרופא, MRI – וה CT – מכשירי ה אל הפענוח והאבחנה בדרך לריפוי המיוחל ולהחלמה. בפרויקט זה בחרנו לחבר את המילה "צילום" אל מרכז שניידר בהיבט אחר - כזה שרואה את התמונה כולה, ולעשות זאת מבעד לעיניו של אמן הצילום המוערך זיו קורן. זיו, צלם דוקומנטרי עטור פרסים ובעל שם עולמי, התנדב יום: את – לתעד לאורך מספר שבועות את מרכז שניידר של היום הדרמות הרפואיות הגדולות ואת הרגעים האנושיים הקטנים, את דקות המתח והעומס הרגשי, את התפקוד המקצועי בשיא הדיוק והריכוז, את החשש, הכאב, התקווה, החיוך - אותו חיוך של ילד, שעבורו מוכנים במרכז שניידר להפוך עולמות. מבעד לעדשתו של זיו ניבט שיקוף של בית החולים לילדים שמצליח להעביר את הרוח והאווירה, גם אם אין מדובר בתיעוד מסודר של כל יחידה ויחידה. סדרת התמונות מאירה את העשייה יומית, משרטטת בצבע ובאור את פני הילדים המאושפזים, – היום בני המשפחות, אנשי הצוות; וכמו בצילום דימות מתקדם מנסה לאבחן, לחבר את חלקי התמונה, ללכוד באופן חזותי את הסיפור שלנו - את אותו ערך מוסף, העושה את מרכז שניידר למקום כל כך יוצא דופן. כל מאבק על החיים הוא דרמה שמצטלמת היטב. אבל כאן, להבדיל מאתרי מלחמה ומאירועי טרור, המאבק הזה כמעט סטרילי, ממש כמו ניתוח לב פתוח מורכב שנעשה בשקט, בריכוז, בדיוק המרבי. הדרמה הגדולה משתקפת "בין השורות" של הצילום. במבט המרוכז בעיני הרופא. בפניו החיוורות של ילד שהתעורר מההרדמה. בדאגה לאין קץ הנשקפת מעיני האם. מצלמתו של זיו קורן לא רק מקפיאה רגעים למזכרת נצח - היא תשליל, חושפת את פניו של החולי, היא מדגישה דרכו, כתמונת

Within the context of a hospital, the word “picture” has a specific connotation: the x-ray room, the imaging department, the advanced CT and MRI, and in the broader sense, the concerned scrutiny of the physician, the analysis, the diagnosis, the treatment, and finally, the anticipated recuperation and recovery. For this project, we chose to link the word “picture” with Schneider Children’s in a novel way and present "the entire picture" through the eyes of renowned and gifted photographer, Ziv Koren. Ziv, an award-winning Docu-photographer of international acclaim, volunteered to document daily life at Schneider Children’s. Over the span of several weeks, he captured the moving medical dramas, the small moments of humanity, the tension-filled minutes, the emotional burden, the skilled professionalism at the peak of precision and concentration, the fear, the pain, the hope, and the smile of the child, for whom Schneider Children’s is willing to change worlds. Through his lens, Ziv successfully manages to convey the spirit and the atmosphere of our children’s hospital and skillfully etches the faces of hospitalized children, their families and staff members in color and light. As sophisticated photographic images aspire to achieve, he connects the pieces of the picture to demonstrate why Schneider Children’s is such an exceptional place. Every fight for life is a human drama, and here the saga is reflected between the lines in the physician’s intense gaze, in the pale face of the child who awakens from

anesthesia, in the worried look in the mother’s eyes. Ziv’s camera not only freezes unforgettable moments forever, it exposes the soul of the patient and the yearning for recovery. It tells a tale as it travels from bed to bed, documenting hard realities not easily witnessed, while simultaneously offering a softened and compassionate view. Every parent of a sick child, every nurse, doctor, and staff member is a player in the drama displayed before us page after page. But the true heroes of the story are the children themselves - Anat, Chaya, Haled, Rachel, Christina, Itamar, Max, Or, Avigail – the children in care at Schneider Children's. There is no greater worry in the world like the fear for the life of a sick child, but pediatric medicine is assuredly the most optimistic medicine there is. Even in the most difficult moments, this hope and belief is apparent on the faces of the brave children at Schneider Children's and those around them. The resulting mosaic creates a visual jigsaw, the entirety of which is more than the sum of its parts. Indeed, much like Schneider Children’s itself.

Schneider Children's epitomizes meticulous concern for every detail, from the special needs of the child to the design of the building and furnishings. The spacious atrium is filled with natural light and enlivened by huge stuffed animals and colorful mobiles. Waiting areas are outfitted with games and computer corners. Large aquariums in every department promote a sense of tranquility. The Educational Center - a school in all respects for hospitalized children - provides study classes and a variety of activities and artistic programs. The computer room and the White Room ("Snoezelen") engender calm and strengthen the child's sense of security. The Starlight is a modern multimedia center that also hosts live performances and parties. With the welcome support of non-profit organizations, volunteers and medical clowns, the children of Schneider Children's enjoy a range of enriching and exciting experiences that reaches right up to their hospitalization beds - everything for the smile of a child.

הצלחתו של מרכז שניידר נובעת בעיקר מהרוח החלוצית, מהאיכות האנושית ומהמסירות של הצוות, יחד עם תמיכה בלתי מתפשרת של ידידים ומתנדבים נאמנים. כל אלו יוצרים שילוב מנצח של שירותים רפואיים מובילים, תנאי אשפוז מתקדמים, שירות מצוין וסביבה ייעודית לילדים ולמשפחותיהם. בשנים האחרונות מרכז שניידר יוצא אל הקהילה ומביא את רפואת הילדים האיכותית של מומחי בית החולים אל ילדי ישראל כמעט "עד הבית". במסגרת פרויקט "שניידר בקהילה" בחולון ובאשדוד, מעניקים מומחי מרכז שניידר מגוון נרחב של שירותי רפואה יועצת במקצועות שונים. גם כיום ניכרת במרכז שניידר ההקפדה על כל פרט, החל בעיצובו המיוחד של המבנה וכלה באבזור ובציוד: מבואת כניסה יפה ומרווחת, המוארת באור טבעי ומציגה צעצועים רכים עצומי ממדים ודגלוני רוח צבעוניים. אזורי המתנה עם משחקים ופינות מחשב. אקווריומים גדולים הממוקמים בכל מחלקה ומשרים תחושת שלווה. מרכז חינוכי - בית ספר לכל דבר לילדים המאושפזים ובו כיתות לימוד ומגוון הפעלות ופרויקטים יצירתיים. חדר מחשוב מבוסס טכנולוגיות מתקדמות וחדר לבן ("סנוזלן") להרגעה ולחיזוק הביטחון העצמי. וכמובן, מתחם הסטארלייט - מרכז מולטימדיה מתקדם המארח גם מופעים ומסיבות. בסיועם המבורך של עמותות, מתנדבים וליצנים רפואיים, נהנים ילדי שניידר ממגוון חוויות מעשירות ומשמחות המגיעות עד למיטת האשפוז - הכול למען חיוך של ילד.

מרכז שניידר לרפואת ילדים מקבוצת הכללית הוא מרכז רפואי שלישוני, יחיד במינו בישראל ובמזרח התיכון, המציע טיפול .18 רפואי מקיף לתינוקות, ילדים ובני נוער, מלידתם ועד גיל כמרכז ייחודי, המתמחה בטיפול במחלות מורכבות, בית החולים מקבל ילדים מכל רחבי ישראל וממדינות אחרות - אינו מבדיל בין לאום, גזע או דת - ובכך, מגשים את חזון מייסדיו להוות גשר לשלום ולקירוב לבבות. ונושא את שמם של תורמיו 29.10.91 – מרכז שניידר נפתח ב העיקריים, אירווינג והלן שניידר מניו יורק. בית החולים מסונף לבית הספר לרפואה ע"ש סאקלר באוניברסיטת תל אביב ומרכז את טובי הרופאים ואנשי המקצוע. מאז הקמתו תרם מרכז שניידר תרומה מכרעת לרפואת הילדים בישראל: בעקבותיו פותחו התמחויות על ברפואת ילדים, שודרגו מחלקות ילדים בבתי חולים ברחבי הארץ והוכנסו סטנדרטים בינלאומיים של מקצוענות ומצוינות, שהעלו את איכות הטיפול ואת רמת אשפוז הילדים בישראל. בתוך שנים מעטות מהקמתו, קנה לו מרכז שניידר שם כאחד המרכזים הטובים בעולם בתחומו. אחראית לכך לא במעט הגישה הרב-תחומית והכוללת, שצוות בית החולים אימץ ומיישם לאורך השנים: שיטת טיפול ייחודית הרואה את הילד ואת משפחתו כמכלול, שבמסגרתה מלווים את הטיפול הרפואי שירותים התפתחותיים, סוציאליים, פסיכולוגיים וחינוכיים - הכול תחת קורת גג אחת. גישה זו מאפשרת לתת מענה למגוון נרחב של צרכים ודרישות הנובעים מטיפול בילדים חולים, שחלקם סובלים ממחלות מורכבות ונדירות. במרכז שניידר עושים את המיטב על מנת להציל את חייהם של ילדים חולים, להעניק חיים ואיכות חיים. עם זאת, על רקע מצוקת תחומי, בהשקעה – תקציב מתמשכת יש צורך במאמץ תמידי ורב ממושכת ובמסירות ללא תנאי של אנשים רבים, המחויבים בכל מאודם למטרה ומתייחסים לבית החולים לילדים כאל מפעל חיים.

Schneider Children's Medical Center, a member of Clalit Health Services, is a tertiary care medical center and the only one if its kind in Israel and the Middle East that provides comprehensive medical care to infants, children and youth from birth up to age 18. As a unique center that specializes in treating complex diseases, the hospital receives referrals from all over Israel as well as other countries - irrespective of race, religion or nationality - thus fulfilling the vision of its founders to serve as a bridge to peace for the unison of hearts. Schneider Children's opened on October 29, 1991, and bears the name of its major donors, Irving and the late Helen Schneider of New York. Affiliated with the Sackler School of Medicine at Tel Aviv University, almost half of Schneider doctors serve on the Faculty. Since its inception, Schneider Children's has contributed significantly towards the development of pediatric care in Israel, prompting the introduction of pediatric subspecialties, the upgrading of children's departments in adult hospitals and the promotion of international standards of professionalism and excellence. Widely recognized as one of the leading centers in the world in its field, Schneider Children's multidisciplinary and comprehensive approaches treat the child as part of the family unit. Medical treatment is accompanied by developmental, social, psychological and educational services - all under one roof. Schneider Children's has achieved many "firsts" in Israel: within the clinical arena through breakthrough procedures and

Anat takes her medication Schneider Children's performs all types of transplants and serves as the national referral center for pediatric organ transplantation, conducting the majority of procedures with success on a par with top medical centers in the world. Schneider Children's team of transplant specialists have all undergone advanced training abroad at leading medical centers for heart, lung, kidney, liver and multiple organ transplants. Schneider Children's has conducted about 400 organ transplants in children since its inception. Due to the courage displayed by families in their most difficult moments, and their willingness to donate organs, sick children get a new lease on life. The Hemato-Oncology Department boasts about 400 “grandchildren”, born to former patients.

Daniel, in the Neonatology Department for two months Daniel was born in the 27th week of pregnancy weighing 790 grams. The Neonatology Department at Schneider Children’s is a level-three national referral center, and annually treats about 1,000 premature infants and newborns. The multidisciplinary staff is experienced in neonatal care and includes doctors, nurses, physical therapists, dieticians and psychosocial professionals who provide necessary support to parents of prematurely born infants hospitalized for weeks or even months. Treatment of children with cancer at Schneider Children's is on a par with leading centers in the world. Success rates for all types of childhood cancer are above 85 percent. שנה. 20 זיו קורן עובד כצלם עיתונות מזה הואהחלאתהקריירה כצלם בצה"ל. כיום, קורן הינו צלם במערכתהעיתון בישראל Polaris Images "ישראל היום", משמש כנציג סוכנות הצילום " באירופה. Ziv Koren has been a professional photojournalist for 20 years. He began his career as a photographer in the Israeli army. Today, Koren works for the Hebrew daily "Israel Hayom", represents "Polaris Images" photo agency in Israel and serves as a "Canon Ambassador" for EMEA. Koren's docu-projects focus mainly on humanitarian issues in Israel and around the world such as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, poverty, the tsunami in Southeast Asia, the earthquake in Haiti, AIDS in South Africa and more. In addition, he has documented the Israeli Defense Forces for more than two decades including military operations such as the withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, the Second Lebanese War, Operation "Cast Lead", and more. His award-winning photographs have contributed to many solo and group exhibitions worldwide at the Metropolitan Museum of Tokyo, the Memorial Museum in Spain, and the War Museum in Croatia to name a few, while his photographs have been widely published in the international media including Time Magazine, Newsweek, The Sunday Times Magazine, Stern, Der Spiegel, Paris Match, Le Figaro, Corriere Della Sera Magazine and Wired Magazine. In 2000, Koren’s 1995 photograph of an exploded Israeli bus was selected as one of the 200 most important images in the last 45 years by World Press Photo. He is also the frequent recipient of prestigious prizes such as the "Photo District News Award" (3 times), "Yann Geffroy Award", "International Color Award" (twice) and "Picture of the Year". Koren was the subject of the documentary film "More Than 1000 Words" which was widely screened at film festivals around the world, garnering a dozen awards. He has contributed to many books, and regularly lectures at workshops and universities worldwide. This is Koren's 12th book.
