Textbooks-Mark Smith

 The bookstore managers met on Tuesday, February 17, 2004 to discuss options for textbook purchasing for distance learning.  Hubert Yates (MCC) announced that the group heard presentations from Missouri Book Services and Nebraska Book Services.  The bookstore managers proposed that the individual colleges decide whether they wish to use a book service. No final decisions were made.  Mark Smith (MGCCC) stated that a system needs to be developed to help the MSVCC whether it is the use of an outside book service or not.  Hubert Yates (MCC) suggested that the DLC association review the original textbook proposal that was prepared by members of a state-wide textbook workgroup and discuss its merit as a solution to the problem at the next DLC meeting 1. Copies of the proposal were distributed to each of the members present.  Alicia Shows (SWMCC) requested that all textbook listings in MSVCC stay constant once registration begins. Mark Smith (MGCCC) asked the DLCs if there was interest in pursuing the purchase of HorizonLive software. This software would allow members to meet virtually. The DLCs were interested but were also concerned about the time needed to incorporate this in their current work schedule.  Jason Pugh reminded the association that ABE/GED was looking to purchase the software. Mr. Pugh thought that the DLC association could possibly have access to use of the software through the ABE/GED program. The association continued to brainstorm about ideas to eliminate the use of the student social security numbers in username and passwords.  The idea of first initial, last name and a computer generated 3 or 4 digit number. The username and password would then be automatically printed on the student profile. Members of the association would also like the username to be listed on the student listing page of the MSVCC enrollment tool.  The members also proposed that with this change comes a computer generated email to the registered student that includes a copy of the student profile.
