MELA Meeting Minutes 2003 - 2017

f. Laura Lofton added that a statement was added in their college catalog in the description just before the listing of academic courses relating to acceptance of host courses: "The Copiah-Lincoln Instructional Council has approved the acceptance of all Mississippi Virtual Community College (MSVCC) courses as an addendum to the courses listed in the Copiah-Lincoln Community College catalog." g. Andrea Scott asked how EMCC's dropping of their attendance policy (after reporting no-shows) would affect other colleges in the consortium. A general discussion about withdrawals ensued and the general agreement was that this would not affect other colleges. h. Mrs. Kimble stated that Kathleen Hutchinson is still very interested in coming to each college and presenting a professional development workshop on MELO. Kathleen and Audra will travel together and visit each DL office at this time. Audra will email members to set up a time/date for this visit. i. Institutional Research Committee review of surveys-handout with corrections was given j. Audra i. Hubert stated that the following changes need to be tested. BB username goes on profile, verified/non-verified on profile, prerequisites will be displayed, extract email by course, area code drop list has been removed in creating user form, sort student withdrawal by reason and date. The following IP address is the testing server: 172.30.24.15/enrollment. k. Audra stated that the allocation of 75,000 for 5,000 seats has been submitted to President's association. Training is planning to be provided hopefully in April-May. Let Audra know how many will be trained. Decide on the number of seats you need and submit to Audra by the April meeting. Hubert Yates and Pam Hemphill stated that problems with cartridges have prevented their instructors from wanting to use D2L. Jennifer Leimer stated that MGCCC has not had this problem. Ms. Hemphill asked Jennifer to provide a list of some of the publishers we are working with that do not have problems in D2L. l. Ms. Kimble stated that the University of Mississippi Medical Center has stated that they would not accept any lab-based science course that was offered online. Randall Bradberry will be discussing this at IHL and would like more information about how colleges handle these courses. Most stated that they use computerized virtual labs or kits. Most do not require any campus visits. Audra asked Andrea to write up a description of the virtual labs. Janice Poole and Letha Richards asked Andrea to come present the virtual lab to her Math/Computer Science departments. Pam Hemphill suggested that Andrea present this at the Dean's Association since many decisions about acceptance are made at this level. Others suggested that this would be a good suggestion for math labs as well. m. Ms. Kimble presented a participation survey from Insite for members to complete. Insite is ready to begin production of their software and is willing to provide training (through 2005) and the software for free with the only condition being that you provide feedback. Insite would like DLCs to request a CD of the software for each campus and distribute it to instructors. It can be installed in offices or home. The only related cost is for duplication of the manual. The only limitation is that it be kept within the State of Mississippi. Debbie Brown and Scott Calhoun are our representatives at Insite. Audra can provide their contact information. n. Laura asked if the "Online Certification" of instructors was being pursued. Audra stated that there would be funding for training, but if there is a need for training, the first priority will be for D2L training. Beyond that additional training could be provided but that the association would need to discuss what types of training are needed.
