Pipeline projects benefit from arc energy weld overlay cladding

Cladding carbon and low alloy steels with a corrosion resistant alloy has been a proven cost saving technology in the oil and gas industry for some years. With the increasing cost of nickel and other metals, this technique is expected to remain an economical and technical alternative to solid alloys. Cladding critical components requires special skills that are also an important part of the protection process. Arc Energy Resources, UK, has substantial experience in this area serving the oil and gas industry. Three recent projects have reinforced the company’s position

as one of the UK’s foremost weld overlay cladding specialists. Following previous contracts to coat pig launcher vessels for a major Middle East project, global pipeline pigging provider Pipeline Engineering (PE) again turned to Arc Energy Resources to meet the exacting specification for corrosion resistant coatings for the wetted surfaces of a pig receiver vessel. The 20" x 24" class 900 scraper receiver, which is designed to receive conventional and intelligent pipeline pigging tools, is destined for the Vasai East Development

Project located approximately 80km west- north-west of Mumbai, off India’s west coast. It is manufactured in high strength carbon steel using S460 rolls and welded plate. Because the hydrocarbon gas is classified as a sour service that is particularly corrosive and could cause cracking and other problems in carbon steel components, the specification required all internal wetted surfaces, flange faces and a quick-closure door to be clad with a 3mm coating of Inconel 625 to increase life expectancy. Arc Energy, which has recently opened a fabrication facility specifically to provide a complete supply service for weld overlay clad vessels, was able to offer to manufacture and overlay the pig receiver. This enabled the welding functions to be carried out at one location, saving time and freeing up capacity at Pipeline Engineering’s own site. › Corrosion-proof cladding of an 8.65m-long, 16" diameter superduplex riser
