Welcome to SPRING GIFT 2014
All-Newand All-Yours.
Published by XPO Exhibitions Ltd
Dear Visitors Welcome to the Spring Gift & Homewares Fair 2014. The most important trade event on your buying calendar has arrived. You may have noticed for the first time we mailed out the front cover, not the entire print magazine, prior to the fair. Fear not ! You can still read and research the magazine in its full glory online www.giftfairs.co.nz, and then pick up your glossy print copy at the show! As well as printing less paper, the initiative is expected to deliver cost savings we can reinvest back into these fairs. From the glimpses we have seen to date there is a huge amount of fresh new product at this Spring Gift Fair for your shops. Many of you have been enjoying more than a glimpse, ordering new stock via our online magazine New Product Showcase section before the show commences. That’s right, all you need to do is open this magazine online then click onto new products in the New Product Showcase to order stock from the exhibitor. Get in early! There’s a myriad of great reading in this issue of Gift magazine, so do take time to research before you attend. A couple of additional new initiatives you’ll notice at this year’s Spring Gift. The first is the Mybiz Hub situated at the rear of our ever growing marquee hall 7 with a small selection of retailer service providers, everything from point of sale software to web designer services. Furthermore we extend for the very first time a very warm welcome to the Jewellery Association of New Zealand (JANZ) who are hosting their AGM onsite at Spring Gift. They’ll be hosting a feature speaker and welcoming all non member Jewellery retailers and exhibitors to join in. We hope to see a lot more of JANZ at all our Gift Fairs in the future. Details are in this magazine. A couple of other important notices, do make sure you book your accommodation early; we’ve negotiated some amazing rates for you, visit www.giftfairs.co.nz for more information, and if you’re planning to drive to Spring Gift on the Sunday do try to pool together and get in early as car spaces will be limited at Alexandra Park Raceway with the Cirque Du Soleil on show. (We’re reliably informed they’ll be opening up the Alexandra raceway grass for parking). Enjoy the fair! Regards Brent Spillane & Tony Waite

Kastner & Öhler, one of the six impressive gia Global Honorees from the 2014 Global Innovation Awards held in Chicago
Michelle Hespe speaks to the team behind Kastner & Öhler, one of the six impressive gia Global Honorees from the 2014 Global Innovation Awards held in Chicago. Kastner & Öhler (K & Ö) has an incredibly rich history behind their exceptionally modern 40,000 square-meter department store. The store will also always hold a special place in retail history, being the first company within the Austro-Hungarian Empire to regulate working hours and holidays. But that came later. The company was founded back in 1873 in a place called Troppau, today known as Oppava, in what today is the Czech Republic. Then, Carl Kastner, while walking the streets in the city of Graz (then under the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy), discovered a little salesroom that was no more than 20 square meters. He decided that would be the location for the store, which now consists of ten buildings from six centuries, on four levels and includes an atrium, flooded with light. Today, the materials are kept simple to showcase the impressive selection of products – black matte metal, limed (dark) oak and industrial-style gray flooring. K & Ö Home is divided into sections to make shopping an enjoyable, easily navigable experience, and in line with the company’s philosophy ‘retail is detail’, every element is thoroughly considered. Under the corporate umbrella, there is one K & Ö Home store, 13 fashion boutiques, 19 sports stores and one outlet store. K & Ö Home is divided into sections to make shopping an enjoyable, easily navigable experience, and in line with the company’s philosophy ‘retail is detail’, every element is thoroughly considered. The main sections include Cooking and Baking, Eating and Drinking, Bathing and Sleeping, and Giving and Decorating. There is also a show kitchen

on the ground floor of the complex, which frequently hosts cooking demonstrations – so there is usually a mix of exciting and welcoming scents in the air. The four gia expert judges – Martin M. Pegler, Wolfgang Gruschwitz, Scott Kohno, and Henrik Peter Reisby Nielsen – were incredibly impressed with the growth, concept and services of Kastner & Öhler. The company has taken an unusual approach in that, in today’s technologically saturated Kastner & Öhler has created a strong customer loyalty program with more than 400,000 registered customers, which is 80 percent of the store’s general customers. Every year, seven event-related EDMs go out to the customer base, and the store also hosts an amateur chef championship in their kitchen to get their customers involved. The more common aspects that make shopping a great experience are all a part of K & Ö Home, such as a wrapping service, home delivery and cashless customer card payment. But the store takes things a step further by also offering 700 underground car spaces, childcare facilities, a carousel and children’s cinema, a personalized shopping service, three restaurants all with different culinary offerings, and even a piano bar. It really is a world unto its own. “Over the years, we have transformed from a regular local supplier of goods to a lifestyle concept store that is not frozen in nostalgia, but rather integrates its unique history in an exciting, modern way,” says Managing Director, Oliver Heun-Lechner.The Kastner & Öhler team heard about gia through the German EK/servicegroup. “We were very impressed with the amount of international contacts we made through this,” Heun-Lechner said. During the International Home + Housewares Show, Heun- Lechner said that it has been an amazing experience for their team to see new food concepts from all over the world, and to meet so many home and living retailers from around the world with whom to exchange opinions. He said it was an incredibly inspiring experience to see so many different products and people in one place, sharing innovations and inspiration. On the night of the gia awards, Heun-Lechner said that his company didn’t have big expectations of winning one of the coveted Global Honoree awards because he was so impressed by the other national gia winners’ entries. “When we saw the other excellent nominated shops, we didn’t have an expectation of winning,” he said. “And when we did win, we were so surprised and happy! It was like a big thank you for all of the hard work over the years that have passed. On behalf of Kastner & Öhler, I want to express my deepest gratitude to the committee for honoring us with this award! It’s been such a great experience.” world, they have deliberately chosen to not have digital presence within the store, “to create a classic yet modern shopping experience,” they say.
“Retail is detail!” says Heun-Lechner. “And focusing on detail means accepting challenges, being open to critique, to excite and to get excited, to inspire, and be open to inspiration. We are so thankful for the encouragement that this gia award gives us.” Now that the team is back in Austria, they have been proudly promoting their gia award in the national press, and will continue to do so throughout their advertising in 2014. Whatever they are doing, they are certainly doing it well – the store now welcomes an astounding 4 million people a year, making for around 1.5 million customers. That’s 141 years to be very proud of. “Retail is detail!”

Retail success depends on people
Tony Alexander Economic Overview
training in as little as four months if they wish. “Online learning has brought a raft of other enhancements over pen and paper, including the use of video, immediate interactive feedback, and the ability for the learner, their supervisor and the person assessing achievement to engage and answer questions. All of these make the learning more engaging for many people.”
It’s not often that we can say the New Zealand economy is leading the world, but in terms of growth prospects for the next three years that appears to be the case. There are many factors set to soon propel our growth rate toward 4.5% and send the unemployment rate back toward 5% and probably lower. They include the housing shortage in Auckland propelling house construction forward, plenty of earthquake strengthening of commercial buildings around the country, investment in the dairy sector, a migration boom driven by Australia’s slowdown, and of course the rebuilding of Christchurch. This rebuilding job will cost between $40bn and $50bn and stretch over a long period of time with that period heavily dependent upon labour availability. Already expectations for the peak in the residential construction phase have been pushed out a year from 2015 to 2016, and the way the labour market is tightening up the peak might not come until 2017. Already there is evidence of employers experiencing above average difficulties in finding both skilled and unskilled staff, even though the unemployment rate is still at a relatively elevated 6%. In Christchurch staff shortages are driving costs including wage rates up, but this has yet to happen in the rest of the country. When it does, and we expect this process to start very soon, the relative attraction to people of shifting to work in Christchurch will begin to diminish. How can Christchurch businesses respond? For some, the logical answer will be to raise charges in order to ration output they cannot boost because of staff shortages. This has already been happening and means businesses need to try to lock in building costs as much as possible before a project starts. For builders however the goal will be to allow room for passing on cost boosts. For some, the answer will be increased reliance upon migrant staff which has already been happening with generally very good results. Other options include outsourcing transportable Good business is getting small b siness package worth up to $700 * . work to other parts of the country, investing in labour-saving technology where possible, and forming work-flow alliances with other construction companies to share staff when supplier delays might have them otherwise sitting idle waiting at one site. Interestingly, while being unable to grow output as rapidly as one would like is a problem, so is the opposite – growing very quickly. Already we have seen a number of contractors fall over because they have expanded their businesses too quickly for their capital bases and ability to manage cash inflows. Talking early on with your banker regarding cash flow management is vital during normal times and especially important now in Christchurch. Regarding cash flow management, keep an eye on financing costs. With growth accelerating the Reserve Bank is tightening monetary policy with the official cash rate already rising from 2.5% to 3.25% (June 2014). A level near 5% is likely come late- 2015 so allow for near a 2% rise in overdraft and other short- term financing costs between now and then. You might find it optimal to shift some debt from a floating to a fixed rate basis, perhaps for out to three years. This economic overview is written by Tony Alexander. Retail Industry Training Organisation (ITO) ServiceIQ can help empower and motivate people to provide great service. “It can be difficult encouraging people to consider retail as a viable and worthwhile career option, but once in the role, it’s up to you to show them that it was the right choice. Part of that is making them feel – and be – competent in their role, and that means growing and enhancing their skills. “Training also gives people working in retail valuable skills and knowledge along with nationally recognised qualifications, which both boost confidence and show that you care about them and their future. “One of the benefits of ServiceIQ’s programmes is that much of the learning is on the job, and the online options make that especially easy. This means training and up-skilling is very cost-effective for you, and allows new knowledge to be put into effect immediately and productively.”
Staff costs are a good proportion of the budget in many retail businesses, so it’s essential that your people do their jobs well. Customers expect great in-store, online, and after-sales experiences. Service is the thing that customers are most likely to complain about. “Customers control your business,” says ServiceIQ chief executive Dean Minchington. “They choose where to spend and what they tell others about the experience, good or bad. People who are delighted will spend, and often spend more. “Retail is an ideal profession for on job training, allowing staff to earn and learn, and your business to keep serving customers. As your staff gain skills on the job, everyone benefits. Your people become more confident and put into practice the things they learn – from keeping customers satisfied to loss prevention. Your customers experience increasing levels of service and professionalism, making them more likely to spend more with you – and spend more often, as well as recommend you to their friends and family.” A recent innovation has been taking one of the most popular retail training programmes and creating an entirely online version, delivering to retailers of any size the online training benefits that many large chains already enjoy. “Traditionally, the seven month on job programme that leads to the award of a Certificate in Retail Level 2 has involved employees working through a series of workbooks, with the regular assessments being sent through the post for approval. Moving the programme entirely online has eliminated this time-costly process, with some people able to complete the
