A few highlights from our Harvest party,THE BEST EVER!

The T-Pollock Band had everyone dancing. A special thank you Glenn Philbrick for sitting in on drums, Richard Hackel on bass, and our very own Roy Jackson on the spoons.

Red Studio Shop: Open Every Saturday from 10:00am-12:00pm... Season Grand Finale Saturday, October 8 th ! We’ll be open occasional weekends for holiday shopping. A warm welcome to Katie Urich , who joins us as Activities Coordinator. Thank you to Capozza Tile & Floor Covering for installing beautiful, safe & long-lasting commercial flooring in the kitchen and dining room, and to The Recompense Fund for their grant, which made the upgrade possible. Recent national code changes mandate a (very expensive) upgrade to our fire sprinkler system. We’re grateful to the Jonah and Elizabeth Dyer Charitable Corporation of South Portland for awarding us a grant covering the entire $10,000 cost of the upgrade. Kudos to two of our most devoted volunteers: Annie Thaxter , our very own dump goddess & sanitary engineer, and Sharon Rent who comes every week to deliver meals and play cards with our residents! Our annual Maine State Housing inspection went extremely well! Thanks to all who have helped to keep our building in tip-top shape & provided much-needed recent improvements. Your good work did not go unnoticed!

CHEBEAGUE TRANSPORTATION COMPANY News from CTC! Winter Schedule Ridership during the winter on CTC’s two late ferries on Friday and Saturday nights (10:30/10:45pm) is historical ly near zero, and CTC buses meeting these trips are al most always empty. The CTC Board of Directors has approved implementa tion of a winter schedule effective October 11, 2022 through May 25, 2023. This winter schedule eliminates the 10:30pm/10:45pm ferry, and corresponding bus trips, on Friday and Saturday evenings. This will save CTC about $10,000 in payroll and fuel costs. This decision was made after careful review of passenger utilization, both on the ferry and the busses. Based on historically low ridership, the elimination of two under utilized trips was deemed a prudent decision by the board to help control expenses amid rising operating costs. Ad ditionally, removing these virtually unused trips allows us to ease some of the staffing challenges we continue to experience. CTC anticipates no additional trip reductions in its regular schedule. Chebeague Transportation Company Winter Schedule 10/11/2022 – May 25, 2023

With dec ades of maritime experience, Brendan will assume respon sibility for maritime operations including managing all boat crew staff.

Thank You, Beth!

After 18 years of service, Captain Beth Putnam is stepping away from CTC to pursue her family’s aquacul ture business. For the past two years, Beth has been our senior captain and safety o f icer. News from Chebeague Housing

In the spring and summer, a Chebeague Housing Survey was delivered to every household, and the online version was available for four months. The response of over 125 surveys is loud and clear: housing is an urgent need on the island, and developing solutions is well supported by the community. Over 80% of people rated the need for housing as needed and critically needed; and over 77% rated housing as important and critically important. Secure housing is needed for islanders who live and work on the island, as well as past islanders who grew up on Chebeague and would like to return. The people who are seeking secure housing include families, couples and single people of all ages, who are seeking rentals, home ownership and/or land to build. Now is the time to work together to develop housing solutions that

support a year round community, and thoughtfully plan for how secure housing will shape the next generation. The primary need is immediate. Funding is available from state, private and non-profit sources, and can help to provide building solutions for Chebeague Island. Chebeague Housing is an organization of volunteers under CICA who have been developing plans for solutions that include rentals and ownership. Phase 1 will be building rentals, as this is the most pressing need at this time. Rentals will be sized for 2-3 bedrooms, suitable for families and/or shared housing (roommates). Maine State Housing has funding available specifically designated for island communities, and will be the source sought for this first project. For more information, or to be involved, contact Ben Yosua-Davis at 978-551-2158 or Megan Dayton at 612-201-7673.

Chebeague Island Council

As the kids return to school and summer visitors leave the island, we will return to our usual routines. The Chebeague Island Council is no different. The Wellness Center will hold a flu vaccine clinic in the coming weeks. We have Dr. St. John from Mend Chiropractic visiting regularly, as well as our podiatrist, Dr. Rybka, and Dr. Larson. We hope to restore a nursing program to the island but staffing shortages have been a problem. Thanks to all the non-profit organization volunteers, we sorted, bagged, and shipped thousands of Clynk bags to the mainland and out of our waste stream. Clynk proceeds will be distributed back to the nonprofits at the end of the year. Thanks to all who tackled the mountains of wine bottles and beer cans! Schoolhouse Seconds had a tremendously successful season. Proceeds from sales go directly

back into Council programs. Items not sold have been packed and shipped off to nonprofits on the mainland for further distribution. We will keep an eye on food and fuel costs and are ready to assist islanders with our Good Samaritan Fund. Inflation has made it hard to make ends meet, and we are here to help. Likewise, we distribute ferry tickets, provided by the CTC, to islanders requiring regular treatment on the mainland due to illness. Lastly, as weather gets cooler, we inevitable think of soup. The Wednesday soups will resume later in the fall. We are also considering other ways to bring the community together for shared food and entertainment. Please let us know if you have any ideas.

The Church Cracked Open by Stephanie Spellers Sometimes it takes disruption and loss to break us open and call us home to God. It’s not surprising that a global pandemic and once-in-a-generation reckoning with white supremacy on top of decades of systemic decline have spurred Christians everywhere to ask who we are, why God placed us here and what difference that makes to the world.

The Church CrackedOpen invites us to surrender privilege and redefine church, not just for the sake of others, but for our own salvation and liberation.

Ten sessions. First meeting on Sunday, October 16 th at 4PM Zoom: meeting # 817 4114 5219 password: 20152020 EVERYONE IS INVITED TO ATTEND FMI: gjbrown58a@gmail.com

The Gospel of Luke (The New Daily Study Bible) by William Barclay

With a historian’s precision, Luke’s Gospel shows painstaking care both in detail and in expression. Of equal distinction is the universal appeal of the Gospel. William Barclay’s insightful comments help each of us to see the infinitude of God’s love through Luke’s eyes. First published in the 1950’s this series has been valued for both devotional and serious Bible study for decades. This New Daily Study Bible continues to present the wisdom of William Barclay with clarifications and inclusion of more contemporary language to help individuals and groups discover what the message of the New Testament really means for their lives.
