DECEMBER 2018 BEACON

Introducing “Burgee Travels”

Team Blackburn

Members, take your Burgee with you on your off season travels this year. Take a picture and send to Ron, for the Beacon. Let’s see where our Burgee goes… Thanks Ian.

I really love Christmas, it's when we celebrate the birth of our Lord, the older I get, the more I appreciate Him and realize that without Him, Lord only knows where I'd be... I've also come to think that the Lord alone controls the peaks and valleys in each of our lives. We all like to think that everything happens for a reason, the implication is that something good will come from even bad things. That can be a pretty tough pill to swallow sometimes. I've also come to think that our own free will tends to drive the ripples and lumps on those peaks and valleys. We also affect how others make it through things, we often can go a little extra distance to help someone through a troubled time. I also believe we control our Left-Overs, primarily by how much we cook in the first place. Done right, a good home cooked meal gets better and better each time it's reheated. One look at the photo in the upper right proves I know what I'm talking about. As we celebrate our Holidays let's remember to set a little something aside and make an effort to help someone who's struggling. Merry Christmas to All Blue Skies, Following Seas Ron

Linda and I would like to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. We hope and pray that all of you have an opportunity to spend time with family and friends this Holiday season. This is my last time writing an article for the NCYC Beacon, my 36th article to be exact. 2018 just flew by and Linda and I had so much fun this year being your Commodore and First Lady. I want to take this opportunity again to thank my Flag Officers, Board of Directors, Fleet Captains, Board Recorder and Harbormaster for their hard work, dedication and devotion to the membership. To manage the tasks presented to them in a positive way, which made this year a success. Special thanks also go to the First Mates and Ancient Mariners for all of their hard work and monetary support. I also want to thank the Week Managers, Weekend OD’s, event planners, food servers, clean-up crews and our many committees for all their help and support.

I now look forward to my presentation at the January Ball to give out the Spirit Award and Member of the Year. I also look forward to serving on the Board of Directors as the Immediate Past Commodore. I look forward to the leadership of our incoming Commodore, Ian Blackburn and his First Lady, Marie. Please give them your support just as you have supported Linda and me. Lastly, I want all of you to know what a privilege it has been for Linda and I to serve as Commodore and First Lady of this great organization known as North Channel Yacht Club. Regards, Commodore Randy

I would like to send a big thank-you to Commodore Randy Pagel and his Lady Linda for a great year. Your dedication and leadership were first-rate and more importantly your friendship with the entire membership is what everyone will remember. Recognition is also in order for the comrades leaving the Board: P/C Pat Carroll, Scott Greenfelder, Tom Martin, Ken Lipowski and Greg Brigman. Thank-you for your dedication, commitment and desire to make a positive difference for the Club! The First Mates and Ancient Mariners are two groups that should be recognized. They continually work hard to help shape the club to what it is today. Thank you for everything that you do - from fundraisers and events, to the major projects that have been completed. Last but certainly not least, I would like to thank the entire membership for your involvement in the club. You are what makes this the best club on the water and one that I am proud to say that I am a member of! Marie and I would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season and look forward to seeing everyone in new year! It would be our honor if you join us on January 19 for the Commodore’s Ball. One of our hard working members, Mary Stackpoole, remains on our sick bay list. Maybe a call to Tom or Mary, or a card will help. Please keep all our members and their families in your thoughts and prayers. Sue and I wish a Very Merry Christmas to all of you. Art

Now on the following page, the story of the first Christmas as told by those who were there.

7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. 8And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. 10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. 12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, 14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men 15 And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. 16 And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. 17 And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. 18 And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. 19 But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.

There were 11 people at the November Business Meeting. There were 18 people at the November Luncheon. The next Business Meeting is December 11th, 2018 at the Moose Lodge at 1:00 P.M.

The December 20th Luncheon will be at Irelands Pub Harper and 14 Mile Rd. Clinton Twp.at 1:00 P.M. Vice-Commodore’s Comments Vice Commodore, Ian Blackburn Congratulated the candidates for 2019. We also need to vote for the 1-year term for the 4 th elected director. Lastly, let’s get the club buttoned up for the winter. Rear-Commodore’s Comments Rear Commodore, Bill Calihan Well here we are with just two island events left on the calendar, both are ISLAND CLOSING. Where has the year gone? Congratulations to all of the new board members and Rear Commodore for success at the ballot box, I look forward to working with all of you. Financial Report Treasurer, Brian Fringer Thanked all the directors for getting the September numbers out. Transferred money from the main bank account to the emergency account. Expenses are coming in. Taxes were paid in September. Big expenses coming up this year are the new seawall and fuel from Balfours. MOTION: Moved by Scott Greenfelder and seconded by Tom Altobelli to approve the Financial Report. Motion Carried ABYA Report P/C Pat Carroll Getting 4 lighted buoys in the North Channel, with more to follow. Correspondence All None CURRENT BUSINESS Activities – Tom Martin $13267 profit for this year against $9000 in expenses. Clubhouse – Scott Greenfelder Hoping all will support closing down the club. First work party is this Saturday followed by the Fat-In. The water will be shutoff the following week. Glenn Nixon asked if Scott found someone to clean out the fryers? Commodore Pagel said Tom the cook has offered to clean them. Harbor & Grounds Tom Altobelli Contacted B and D Electric Supply to get a quote for new pedestals for the docks (last quote was in 2017 at about $783 each). Discussed the configuration of them (10 pedestals). Ask Brian Fringer if he can order them now? Also, trying to get samples for chairs for the island. Marine contractor has still not showed up to put in 2 ice clusters and 2 new pilings. Would like one piling at the Fin dock and one at the island. Tom mentioned concern from pilings shearing off early from being prematurely rotten. Lastly, he discussed getting samples of the proposed plastic decking as opposed to real wood for the new docks. The plastic docks will not have any film on top. Brian asked when the ice cluster expense is coming in? Tom thinks first or second week of November. $2500 apiece for the ice clusters. Fleet Captain – Ken Lipowski No report OLD BUSINESS Update on Archived Record Keeping P/C Bill Hendricks was a guest to discuss work he has begun searching for NC documents and records to create an archiving site so they will never get lost or destroyed. He is scanning all available hard copies of all available documents and has been creating PDF’s. Some examples include board and general membership meeting minutes, Beacons, history documents, even documents from Chrysler YC. Wants to archive all documents he can get his hands on. He will initially be storing these on Google Drive. Ron Draper asked how will we prevent someone from going on a website, downloading the documents and changing them? Does the club need an assigned club archivist? Should the board create an appointed position for this going forward? P/C Hendricks stated this project is very new and most likely several years away from being available to the membership.

NEW BUSINESS

Update on worker-pay status Debbie Siwek asked the OD’s to send her who did and didn’t work their hours.

Good of the order P/C Pat Carroll inquired about the precedent for first right of refusal for OD assignments from year to year. P/C Bill Hendricks asked about investigating the rules for the cash reserve fund. How high can it be? Do we want to investigate another limit to the fund regarding the amount it should be? Don’t want to get into the position of having a robust cash position and not being able to use it for a non-emergency project. Do we want to investigate capping this? Member of Month Ron Draper nominated P/C Bill Hendricks for his work on the archiving proposal. Seconded by Tom Altobelli. Motion Carried.
