RODEO CORPUS CHRISTI
Road LessTraveled Buckaloo finds success with three partners this season
BY TRACY RENCK I t wouldn’t normally be the GPS route given to reach the top of the PRCA Team Roping Header World Standings. Yet, Bubba Buckaloo is succeeding nonetheless. The Kingston, Okla., cowboy has teamed with three different partners and been using his backup horse since late March. Still, he’s climbed to second place in the April 30 RAMPRCAWorld Standings with $43,325. Buckaloo’s latest strike came when he teamed with Clint Summers to win Rodeo Corpus Christi (Texas) with a rodeo-record, 17.0-second time on three head. The duo broke the record of 19.0 seconds on three head set by Trevor Brazile/Patrick Smith in 2017. “I was just filling in with Clint for a couple of weeks,” Buckaloo said, “and it worked out pretty good because we went to three rodeos (Logandale, Nev., Red Bluff, Calif., and Corpus Christi), and we won almost $6,000.”
Buckaloo and Summers earned $3,635 each in Corpus Christi – $2,635 each for the average crown. “When you rodeo, everybody is like one big family, and I have known Bubba forever,” said Summers, 26. “He ropes good and I heard through the grapevine that he didn’t have a run at those rodeos. I also didn’t have a run at those rodeos and we just decided to go together. It was awesome to win at Corpus, and Bubba did great. There was no pressure and we had a lot of fun.” The top run made by Buckaloo and Summers came in the first round when they split third with a 5.0-second time. They took care of business with a 6.3-second run in the second round and stopped the clock in 5.7 seconds in the third round to capture the average. “Our third one, I wanted to be safe at the barrier and go turn the steer, and I knew we would win first or second if we did that,” Buckaloo said. “This was only my second time competing at Corpus, so it was great to win. I came
