No Big Day Out, but still a bumper live line-up for the Summer. SUMMER STARTS EARLY

I n fact, the action gets into full swing this month with the annual Ragamuffin Festival switching from Rotorua to

Auckland’s Trusts Arena on December 13; the reconstituted UB40 – AKA founding members Ali Campbell, Astro and Mickey Virtue – with Cypress Hill, Chronixx and Gappy Ranks, head up the overseas contingent, while flying the flag for Aotearoa will be reggae fest favorites like Katchafire and Aaradhna. Rhythm and Vines is back again to bring a banging start to the NewYear at the Waiohika Estate Vineyard in Gisborne, with this year’s line-up including the likes of Bastille, Chasing & Status, Danish singer-songwriter MØ, Danny Brown and Delta Heavy, along with a host of local stars like P-Money, State Of Mind, @Peace and PNC. Bastille will also headline the companion Rhythm and Alps festival in Wanaka, which runs over the same period. Then it’s into January, and our favourite festival Laneways, which once again will he held on Auckland Anniversary Day at Silo Park on the waterfront. As usual the eclectic line-up has pretty much something for everyone: new British rock duo Royal Blood, Australian acts such as Courtney Barnett and Angus & Julia Stone, acclaimed LA electronic maestro Flying Lotus, veteran Scottish popsters Belle & Sebastian – keep an eye out for their new album – quirky American songsmith St Vincent and rising English star FKA Twigs.

The internatonal contingent will be complemented by a roster of cool Kiwi talent, headed up by Connan Mockasin and Tiny Ruins. The annual winery tour kicks off a week earlier and will run through until the end of February.

Dave Dobbyn and Don McGlashan make for an intriguing headlining duo, with Anika Moa and the recent Hall Of Fame inductees Supergroove set to add to the fun. Meanwhile, rock fans will have already cleared a date in their diary for Westfest at Alexandra Park in Auckland on March 3. Soundgarden, Faith No More, Judas Priest and All Time Low are the first headliners to be announced and more big names will have been confirmed by the time you read this. Outside of the festivals, there also some big names due for concerts in Auckland and other parts of the country over the next few months, kicking off in December with Katy Perry at the Vector Arena. With Paul Simon & Sting, Roxette and Drake also on their way, it’s going to be another big Summer for music – so make sure you do your homework and check out their latest releases!
