Chart-topping sensations SOL3 Mio return with their first live DVD, and a host of other Christmas goodies. AMITAI PATI talks to John Ferguson about what has been a hugely successful year for the pop opera trio.

W hen they are not being Sol3 Mio, brothers Pene and Amitai Pati, and cousin Moses Mackay are hard work following their own opera careers. So when it came to recording their first live music DVD, Amitai admits they were a little bit out of practice. “The show at the Michael Fowler Centre was pretty much all put together before we got back to New Zealand,” he tells STACK on

the eve of their performance at last month’s New Zealand Music Awards. “We had just landed back in New Zealand and everyone was feeling a bit tired and jet-lagged.We got straight into rehearsals and it was really tough because we hadn’t been singing as a group for a long time. But after a few beers, things start to run smoothly again!” And here is certainly no sign of rustiness on the just-released Ladies And Gentleman…

Sol3 Mio Live In Concert, which captures the warmth and magic of the trio’s hugely popular live shows. The DVD features 22 of Sol3 Mio’s most popular songs, including opera classics such as La Danza and Au fond du temple saint (AKA The Pearl Fishers’ Duet ), as well as crowd favourites like Ten Guitar s and Yellow Bird, and, appropriately enough, the festive standard HaveYourself A Merry Christma s.
