MUSIC REVIEWS

A Tribe Called Red We Are The Halluci Nation A Tribe Called Red are on a mission to unite indigenous cultures and flame the fight against colonisation with their third album, We Are The Halluci Nation . The DJ collective are credited with pioneering a sound now known as powwow; a banging mix of EDM, hip hop, indigenous instruments and tribal chants. Lead single R.E.D – featuring Yasiin Bey AKA hip hop innovator Mos Def – is straight fire, mixing hip hop cuts with a heaving dubstep flow and a tribal choir. The record jumps from powwow ( Sila ) to a more traditional world music sound ( The Light ) and back again ( Maimi Koopi ) without warning, showcasing its broad scope with aplomb. Tove Lo Lady Wood This is one of those rare cases in music when the album title actually gives you insight into the content on the disc – it’s evocative ( Cool Girl ), suggestive ( Influence ), and insane(ly good). Lady Wood most notably features the aforementioned single Cool Girl , which doesn’t get any less haunting following consecutive listens – especially once you find out that the track was inspired by events in the similarly mind- bending Gone Girl. With the Swedish singer also featuring on a collab with Aussie DJ Flume on Say It earlier this year, you can expect to hear some of ol' Harley's influence in Tove Lo's latest. Old Habits die hard – it’s a great new release. (Universal) Alesha Kolbe

REMI Divas & Demons

Divas & Demons might just give Melbourne duo REMI something that Australian hip hop has rarely seen: A global voice. Emcee Remi Kolowale and beat wizard Justin ‘Sensible J’ Smith have produced a deeply intimate sophomore record which touches on the complexities of politics,

mental illness, love and race. “This is first world problems, bought to you by the oppressed,” Remi spits in opener D.A.D , before flowing seamlessly into the crazily catchy Forsaken Man and lead single For Good , featuring fellow local trailblazer Sampa The Great. It’s in these early songs that the intensity of Remi’s agenda can be forgotten, but damn those beats are just too good, and you’re going to want to dance. At 16 tracks long, D&D is a hefty album, but for good reason – the young frontman has a lot to say. The second half is the deepest Remi has ever gone; Lose Sleep and Outsiders are the voice for those who may never be heard, Hate You is the self-loathing devil on your shoulder, and Substance Therapy is that final escape. This is how we get down. (House of Beige)Tim Lambert
