women's soccer coach Tony da Luz. It is not, however, the beginning of the association between the university and da Luz. On the contrary-da Luz has been a fixture on the USD soccer scene, both as a player and a coach, since the early years of the 1980's. A former team captain and "Most Valuable Player" with the USD men's team, as well as a West Coast Conference "Honorable Mention" selection, Tony da Luz first joined the USD staff of Head Coach Seamus McFadden as chief assistant coach prior to the 1984 season. During his tenure, da Luz assisted a USD program that compiled five straight winning seasons, reaching 19-4-0 in 1987 and advancing as far as the second round of the NCAA Division I tournament in 1990. His duties included scouting, recruiting, travel coordination and game strategy preparation. It is these tasks which have prepared da Luz well for the assign– ment which he now undertakes. Tony and his wife, Amy, are the proud parents of two young sons, Austin and Tyler. They live in the Del Mar area of coastal San Diego county. 1992 Season Outlook As the USD women's soccer team enters its first , season, it does knowing the '92 season will be one filled with new experiences and challenges. It is a young, relatively inexperienced squad that first year head coach Tony da Luz will field in 1992. Only two of the 19 players on the roster have collegiate experience. Six players played with USD's club pro– gram with the remaining eleven players being fre shmen. What the Toreros lack in experience they will make up for in enthusiasm. The Toreros, da Luz prom– ises, "will be an interesting club, a fun team to watch." The '92 Toreros will look to emphasize defense before offense. To that end, da Luz looks to a pair of talented

defenders, junior Karmyn Clark, a transfer from Palomar JC, and sophomore Amie McMullin, a transfer from Regis College, to pace the defensive efforts. Sophomore Denise Timmermans, on last year's club team, will be the team 's third key defender. They will look to protect freshman Danielle Lopez, the Toreros' lone goalkeeper. A pair of highly coveted freshman mid fielders will pace the Toreros ' offense. In Kelly Arthur and
Dawn Birdsall, the Toreros have the type of players who, according to da Luz, will be the "cornerstones of our team for the next several years." Additional offen– sive power should come from freshmen ElaineMilligan, Mindy Campbell and Aly Parker. The '92 season will be a learning experience for the USO Toreros, one filled with both challenges and plenty of excitement.
