Make the most of play for children with ASD Play provides the perfect context for children with ASD and other social communication difficulties to learn a variety of important skills. Yet, very few practical resources are available to help parents and professionals make the most of play.

The Hanen Centre’s new Plan for People Play booklet offers simple, research-based ideas for building children’s interaction and communica- tion skills during “people games” – the people-focused games that offer excellent opportunities for promoting attention and turn-taking skills.

Use the ideas in this booklet to supplement your therapy sessions, or share the book with parents to help them:

Choose the most appropriate people games based on their child’s sensory preferences. Identify the next interaction step their child can take. Use responsive-interaction strategies during people games that make it easier for their child to take his next stepwith actions, sounds or words.
