Fire Extinguisher Ratings

Class A — for ordinary combustible materials such as paper, wood, cardboard and most plastics. The number indicates the amount of water it holds and the amount of fire it can extinguish. Class B — flammable or combustible liquids like gasoline, kerosene, grease and oil. The number indicates the approximate number of square feet of fire it can extinguish. Class C — electrical equipment, such as appliances, circuit breakers, wiring and outlets. Never use water to extinguish class C fires. Class C extinguishers have no numerical rating. The C classification means the extinguishing agent will not conduct electricity.

Class D — fires involving combustible metals, such as magnesium, potassium and sodium. Class D units have no numerical rating. They are for class D fires only. For example, a 1A, 10B:C extinguisher shows the unit is multi-purpose, approved for Class A fires and contains one pound of water. The 10B indicates it will treat approximately 10 square feet of fire. The unit is also rated for Class C, which means it is approved for electrical fires. The unit is not approved for Class D, chemical fires.
