Saving on lighting costs goes way beyond turning off the light switch when you leave the room — although that's still a good idea! Replacing your incandescent lights with CFL's or LED bulbs are actions you can take to immediately save energy and money. When buying bulbs, look for the highest lumens-per-watt ratio. Lumens measure the amount of light a bulb gives off, the greater the lumens the brighter the bulb. Watts measure how much energy a bulb uses. Example: 60W incandescent provides 800 lumens: 800/60 = 13.33 lumens per watt 13W CFL provides 800 lumens: 800/13 = 61.54 lumens per watt 9.5W LED provides 800 lumens: 800/9.5 = 84.21 lumens per watt The higher the ratio the greater the savings! It is also a great idea to check with your electricity provider for possible rebates for changing to CFL or LED bulbs.
