Unit 4 6.3 Weather & Climate 3 Dimensions & Progressions

STANDARD 6.3.3

6.3.3 Develop and use a model to showhow unequal heating of Earth’s systems cause patterns of atmospheric and oceanic circulation that determine regional climates . Emphasize how warm water and air move from the equator toward the poles. Examples of models could include Utah regional patterns such as lake-effect and inversion. MS-ESS2-5

CONCEPTS

SKILLS

● Unequal heating of Earth’s systems causes patterns of atmospheric and oceanic circulation that determine regional climates

● Develop a Model ● Use aModel

LEARNING PROGRESSIONS

● Unequal heating of Earth creates areas of cold & warm air masses ● Air masses move around Earth in predictable patterns ● The spinning of Earth creates the coriolis effect ● Difference between weather and climate VOCABULARY ● Tropical Air mass ● Polar Air Mass ● Continental Air Mass ● Maritime Air Mass ● Trade Winds ● Westerlies ● Coriolis Effect ● Ocean Currents ● Lake Effect ● Inversion

● Weather ● Climate

POSSIBLE PHENOMENA

● At times, if you live in Utah Valley, it is diffcult to see the mountains. ● Salt Lake City, Utah and Naples, Italy are located on the same latitude in the Northern Hemisphere, but the average July temperature in Salt Lake City is 90°F and in Naples 77°F. ● On one side of Lake Michigan a student wakes up and sees barely any snow on the ground. A student who lives on the other side of Lake Michigan observes 1 foot of snow.

END OF UNIT COMPETENCY WITH LANGUAGE SUPPORTS ● I can create a t-chart to show the difference between weather and climate. ○ Language Supports: ■ Nouns (patterns, atmosphere conditions, region, long-term)
