TOURING 23/11 - 8/12

A month on from the release of her incendiary new album Good Citizens , Cash Savage is about to take her critically-acclaimed bandThe Last Drinks on tour; we spoke to the frontwoman about getting these tracks from her head to the studio to the stage. CASH SAVAGE

you think we can get out of the ‘preaching to the choir’ position, or is that just flat-out not my responsibility (or yours, or any member of an oppressed group)? I don’t really have any answers. I do know it’s not yours or my responsibility. We are attracted to bubbles for many reasons. One of which is often safety. I feel safer in my bubble and I don’t see any issue with that. On top of that it is very hard for the oppressed to make the change. ZKR

Your band live is lauded as being one of the best in the country. Are you conscious of where and how you’ve honed yourselves - do you remember seeing the improvements happening in real time over the years, to get where you are? It’s all felt very organic. We love playing live and we’ve done an enormous amount of shows together. I’ve never really paid any attention to any or noticed any improvments. I guess if I think about it we are all very comfortable together and we only seem to get more so.

am I going to recreate this on stage?’ Or do you keep the recording as close to something you can easily translate live? I think I write more for live than recording. I’m more likely to be thinking about the song being performed while writing it. Having said that with this record there were a few songs that were put together in the studio and in that moment we are all thinking more about getting the best recorded result. Some of the songs have had immediate changes to them so they make more sense live. For example Collapse has already slightly changed. The changes are subtle but they work better on stage.

Are there any songs from the new record which have received a surprising reaction from your live audiences (especially as you’re now a few dates into your European tour)? I’m surprised how many people are telling me that Collapse is their favourite song. I thought it was the least accessible song on the record. It’s one of my favourites but I figured it would be more polarizing than it is. You’ve said that you think we’re moving towards a time when the average person feels more comfortable calling out sh-t behaviour, and that you hope that’s not just because of the circles you move in. MIDNIGHT OIL

T he good news is if you’re looking for More Robyn, you’re coming to the right place. 2010’s Body Talk was as near to a perfect pop album as is possible (Carly Rae Jepsen and Ariana Grande adding to the heat in the past half decade) and Honey is everything a level-up should be. Straddling the same sides that made Dancing On My Own and Call Your Girlfriend into indie dancefloor megahits, Honey hits sombre slow jams alongside air-punching anthems. The hallmark of Robyn’s songwriting is evoking a moment trapped in time, a perfect capsule of place and feeling. Eight years on and the same struggles feel eternal, and divine. Jake Cleland ROBYN

I n 2017 – after 77 performances to over a half million people in 16 countries across five continents – Midnight Oil’s colossal The Great Circle Tour came home to Australia. The Oils made their way from rural centres to capital cities, tying it all up in their hometown of Sydney, at The Domain, on November 11 – Armistice Day (or Remembrance Day). The audio and visual recordings of this historic concert are available this month in a CD/DVD package which captures the Oil’s fiery and

unrelenting performance, while the deluxe edition includes a bonus doco about the band’s involvement in raising awareness of the threats facing the Great Barrier Reef. ZKR
