Celebrating 100 Years of Thinking Day in Athenry

A very special milestone was celebrated in Athenry this year as the local Brownies, Guides and Senior Branch marked 100 years of Thinking Day — a significant occasion in the history of the Guiding movement. Athenry Brownies, Guides and Senior Branch have played an active role in the community for many decades, fostering friendship, leadership and service among generations of young people. On 22 February 2026, members joined Guides from across Galway Area to commemorate the centenary of Thinking Day, an occasion observed worldwide in honour of Lord and Lady Baden-Powell, founders of the Scouting and Guiding movement. To celebrate the historic anniversary, Galway Area gathered in Clarin College, Athenry, for a day of reflection, celebration and shared community spirit. The event brought together members past and present, highlighting both the rich tradition of Guiding in the region and the continued strength of the movement today. The centenary celebration served as a reminder of the lasting contribution Guiding has made to communities like Athenry over the past century, encouraging young people to develop confidence, independence and lifelong friendships. Sincere thanks are extended to everyone who helped organise and support the event, making the occasion such a memorable and meaningful celebration for all involved.
